predictions-euro-01062021

It’s nearly time and fans around the world not just Europe are eagerly anticipating Euro 2020. The long wait will be worth it with lots of exciting football being played all over Europe. Just who will be the winners of Euro 2020?

This is an open tournament, the odds reflect that. There is no strong favourite to become European champions. Following the form of top contenders such as England, France, Belgium, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands is going to be very important in the coming weeks. Making predictions isnt easy, especially with this tournament. Not many predicted wins for Greece or Portugal, but we'll try our very best!

Some teams may start slowly, others may get off to a great start but peak too early. Time to look ahead to the tournament and try to predict just what might happen in June and July.

Predictions for the Group Stages

Euro 2020 has 24 countries all aiming to become European champions on July 11. They have been drawn into six groups of four and there are some fantastic games are on the way. The top two in each group will go into the last 16 but also the four best third-placed teams. Now let us look at each of the six groups.

Group A

belotti-nazionale

Italy are the tip to win a group that sees them take on Turkey, Switzerland and Wales. It’s good to see the Italian side back in a major finals after missing out on the 2018 World Cup. Going into their final warm-up game, they had gone 26 games unbeaten and not conceded in the last seven scoring at least twice in each match. They are dangerous outsiders in this tournament and currently ranked seventh in the FIFA World Rankings.

We expect Italy to win the group but choosing the runners-up isn’t so easy a task. Switzerland are ranked 13th in the world, Wales 17th and Turkey 29th. Switzerland have more experience of playing in major finals and have won their last six internationals. They open their campaign against Wales and that’s a vital game.

Wales have again made it to the finals but don’t expect a run to the last four as they did in 2016. They are without their boss Ryan Giggs but do have a fit Gareth Bale. They struggle for goals though, only scoring more than once in their last 11 games after the 3-0 defeat by France on 2 June.

Turkey have had some good results of late but mostly on home soil. They are unbeaten in their last six games (five at home) but that run will most likely end when playing Italy in Rome in the first match of the tournament. Only one of their last five away games has been won.

Italy can win this group and possibly with maximum points. Switzerland can finish second and it’ll be close between Turkey and Wales for third with slight preference for Turkey.

Prediction -  1 Italy 2 Switzerland 3 Turkey 4 Wales

Group B

Belgium are one of the favourites to win Euro 2020. They were undefeated on their way to these finals in a group that saw them beat Russia twice. Now they have to take the Russians on again as well as Denmark and Finland.

The Belgians made it to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and will be a major threat in this tournament. It’s just getting their head in front and actually winning the tournament that they find hard. It’ll be even harder if Kevin De Bruyne is ruled out due to the injury he sustained in the Champions League final.

It may well be a close battle to secure second spot in this group. Russia finished second behind Belgium in their qualifying group, losing both their matches. Another defeat looks on the cards here, so they will be doing their best to finish second and go into the knock-out stages. That might be difficult though as their form is not good at all.

Denmark look to be the country that can find second in this group. Their form is good, they even won at Wembley last year. They did lose twice to Belgium in the 2020/21 Nations League, so winning the group doesn't look likely. Second place does though

Finland are in a major finals for the first time in their history. The best they can hope for is a third place but unless Teemu Pukki suddenly finds amazing form, they look destined to finish bottom.

Prediction:  1 Belgium  2 Denmark 3 Russia 4 Finland

Group C

The Netherlands missed both Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup finals. They are back on the main stage now and are our comfortable tip to win Group C.  Going deep in Euro 2020 isn't too likely though unless they can greatly improve their current form.

It's going to be close for second place in this group. Ukraine beat Northern Ireland on Thursday 3 June but they are still struggling for form and goals. Bets on under 2.5 goals in their matches might be a good bet to make. It's a bit disappointing as they looked good outsiders at one time. They may be able to finish second but this is a difficult group to bet on. Watch closely the first games played by each team to see how well they are playing.

Austria are also struggling at present, this isn't the best of groups apart from the Netherlands. North Macedonia recently won away i Germany. This is their first time in a major finals and could cause more surprises in this group, especially against Austria and Ukraine.

Prediction:  1 Netherlands 2 Ukraine 3 North Macedonia 4 Austria

Group D

England are one of the favourites to win Euro 2020. Yes, they have a good set of players but England always seem to find some way of being knocked out. Home advantage for the key games is important for them, but they are not unbeatable at Wembley. Their biggest problem in Euro 2020 could be winning this group,

Why? Well we all talk about Group F being 'The Group of Death' with France, Germany and Portugal. The winner of Group D takes on the runner-up in that group. That means England could face one of those three nations at Wembley. You could say that England are the fifth member of that 'Group of Death.'

They should be able to win this group as they face three teams not in the best of form and who England have beaten in the past. Croatia struggle on their travels and have failed to beat England in two games since the 2018 World Cup semi-final win over them, including a loss at Wembley. Their away form is poor too, so that won't help. This looks a group where there could be some low scoring games and draws between Scotland, Croatia and the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic have also been struggling too, so can't be backed to win this group at all. That leaves us with Scotland who are in their first major finals since 1998. They had to go through the play-offs to reach these finals, both ties being won in penalty shoot-outs. This means so much to them being back on the main stage. Two of their three games are played on home soil and both are winnable. That particularly applies to their game against the Czech Republic who they have beaten twice recently in the Nations League. Playing England at Wembley is a dream for them and their players will be highly motivated for this match. Getting into the knock-out stages is possible,

Prediction:  1 England 2  Croatia 3 Scotland 4 Czech Republic

Group E

Spain are the clear favourites to win Group D and that is just what we believe will happen. They have been in top form since their Nations League collapse in 2018. This isn't a difficult group to finish top of. One note with Spain is that a lot of games they play in see both teams score, so consider that when betting on their matches.

Poland will be battling it out with Sweden and Slovakia for second spot. They will be looking for goals from Lewandowski of course. He's scored 50 more goals in internationals than any other Polish player in their line-up. Their form coming into Euro 2020 isn't good though.

Sweden are in good form and before a final friendly against Armenia had won four games in a row, all with clean sheets. No Ibrahimovic though but he's barely played for them in recent years anyway. Slovakia are the fourth team in the group and had to come through the play-offs to get into the finals. Their away form is poor though.

Prediction: 1 Spain 2 Sweden 3 Poland 4 Slovakia

Group F

This is what you call saving the best for last. It's the 'Group of Death' and the hardest to predict. There could well be some draws in this group and the best news for the big three is that they could finish third and still make it into the knock-out stages,  Portugal are the defending champions and have a strong set of players. It's not all about Ronaldo now, they look stronger now than the team that won this title in 2016. Any English Premier League fans will know just how good the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva to name but two are.

France are bidding to add the European championship to their World Cup crown. They are in good form and so powerful up front. Benzema, Griezmann, Mbappe and Giroud have over 120 international goals between them.  A weakness may be between the sticks, Lloris has over 120 caps but can make silly mistakes at time, ask Tottenham fans.

Germany had a terrible time in 2018 with a poor World Cup defence and relegation in the Nations League until they changed the rules. They have improved but are still inconsistent with that loss to North Macedonia and a 6-0 thrashing last November in Spain. Can Werner start scoring more regularly?

Poor Hungary have to contend with all these three giants of European football. They last made it to the European Championship finals in 1972 and are destined to finish fourth.

Prediction:  1 France 2 Portugal 3 Germany 4 Hungary

The Road to the Title

favoris-bookmakers-euro2020-24032021

The last sixteen will see some massive matches being played. Based on the predictions made above, we'd see games such as Italy v Ukraine, Croatia v Sweden, England v Portugal and Switzerland v Denmark. The other four games will include teams that finish third in their groups so it's not easy at this stage to say in which parts of the draw they will fit into.

For example, Germany we tip to finish third in their group and that could see them facing either Belgium or the Netherlands in the last 16, both very difficult ties. If Spain win their group, which we believe they will, their last 16 opponents could be Turkey, Russia, North Macedonia or Scotland, all games they could win.  As for France, they could be up against Turkey, Russia or North Macedonia, no big problems there. The Netherlands possible opponents aren't so easy with Scotland, Sweden or Germany.

The last eight could have some blockbuster games with Belgium v Italy and England v Spain. It has to be said that if England are to win Euro 2020, they may have do it the hard way. A semi-final could be against the Netherlands. If they didn't win their group then they could end up playing countries such as Sweden, France, Belgium or Italy.

Who will win Euro 2020?  France look a very good bet to do just that. They have a strong team and the experience of knowing how to win big titles. That's our view at this moment but a lot of water is going to flow under the bridge over the next month. Injuries can occur, what if France lost Mbappe or England lost Kane?  Teams expected to do well might not do so and there is bound to be at least one surprise team. Follow the views of our betting experts throughout Euro 2020 to keep you up to date with our views on the championship.
