Antonelli Looks to Shatter F1 Championship Record in Mexico City GP

While there are still five rounds remaining in the 2026 Formula 1 season, starting with the Mexico City Grand Prix this weekend, the Championship race could be wrapped up at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez by one Kimi Andrea Antonelli.

As shown in our F1 predictions, Antonelli boasts a staggering 123-point advantage over his veteran teammate George Russell, meaning the equation ahead of the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix is brutally simple: Antonelli needs just a ninth-place finish to mathematically secure the World Drivers’ Championship.

Antonelli is set to shatter Max Verstappen’s record as the youngest king in F1 history!

The Italian needs just two points to secure the Championship, provided he is not outscored by Russell by 24 points or Hamilton by 25. Additionally, if neither Russell nor Hamilton wins the Mexico City Grand Prix, Antonelli will win the title regardless of his finishing position.

Countback could also prove decisive if Antonelli finishes level on points with either of his closest rivals. This remains possible if Russell wins in Mexico while Antonelli finishes ninth, or Hamilton wins with the Mercedes youngster taking 10th. Antonelli would win the tiebreak thanks to his superior number of race victories.

If the championship is shortened by the season ending in Imola rather than Abu Dhabi, Antonelli has already become world champion in Austin, but the final races are still due to go ahead as planned at the time of writing.

Title Scenarios for Antonelli at the 2026 Mexico City GP

Antonelli needs to score just 2 points (finish 9th or higher) to seal the title in Mexico:

ScenarioWhat Antonelli NeedsWhat Rivals Need to Happen
Finish 9th or betterP9 (2 pts) or higherThe title is secured regardless of what Russell or Hamilton do.
Finish 10thP1 (1 pt)He is crowned champion unless George Russell wins the race (if Hamilton wins and Antonelli is 10th, Antonelli still wins on countback).
Finish outside top 10 (0 pts)0 pointsHe wins the championship provided neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton wins the Grand Prix.

Mathematical Contenders;

  • George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are the only two drivers mathematically capable of stopping Antonelli from taking the crown in Mexico.
  • Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris have officially been eliminated from title contention.
  • Even if Antonelli fails to score in Mexico, a victory by either Russell or Hamilton would merely push the championship battle onto the next round in Brazil.
