Soweto Derby 186: Can AmaKhosi Breach the Buccaneers Defensive Wall?

The first Soweto Derby of the 2026-27 Betway Premiership season is here, and the reigning champions, Orlando Pirates, enter this match against their arch rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, operating at the absolute peak of their powers.

The Buccaneers have morphed into an impenetrable fortress under Jose Riveiro, scoring 11 goals without conceding a single reply in their last four matches across all competitions since their defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final on October 10.

Riveiro’s side sit firmly in second place in the league standings with 22 points, breathing down the necks of Masandawana, who have played a game more. Check out all the key stats for today’s Soweto Derby in our Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs prediction.

Kaizer Chiefs are winless at Orlando Stadium since October 2022!

AmaKhosi arrive on enemy territory in fifth place in the league standings and trailing the Bucs by eight points. They are still unbeaten after eight games this season but have left far too many points on the table, drawing a league-high five matches, including each of their last three.

Stripped of key personnel due to injuries, Fernando Da Cruz will have to rely on a heavily reshuffled system and the defensive resilience of a returning Rushwin Dortley, who will be tasked with keeping the likes of Tshepang Moremi and Boitumelo Radiopane quiet.

The Durban Derby: Arthur Zwane’s Usuthu Chasing Five-in-a-Row

While all eyes may be on the blockbuster in Soweto, the evening fixture in Durban could provide the day’s most fascinating tactical battle, where AmaZulu take on local rivals Golden Arrows at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.

Arthur Zwane’s influence at AmaZulu is beginning to show, with Usuthu currently riding a stunning five-match winning streak across all competitions. This run has seen them move up to third place in the league standings, just four points off league-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

AmaZulu have only conceded once in their last four matches across all competitions!

At the opposite end of the pitch, Zimbabwe international Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya is enjoying the season of his life, currently leading the PSL Golden Boot race with eight goals, three more than his closest rival Nqaba Xulu of Richards Bay.

A victory tonight over Golden Arrows - who have only won one of their eight league matches this season (D5 L2) - would consolidate AmaZulu’s top-three status and catapult them into genuine title-contending dark horses this season.
