DR Congo have had a tough run in their preparations for the 2026 World Cup. Things are not about to get any easier as they face a nation 41 places above them in world rankings, Portugal. This Group K match will mark the first ever meeting between the two nations. Both DR Congo and Portugal failed to score just twice in their respective last 10 matches. This is solid ground for our prediction as we back goals on both ends.
Portugal, the favorites here, are making their ninth World Cup appearance and a seventh consecutive. This will be their 36th World Cup game, and they will be targeting an 18th win at the world championships.
Surprisingly, even with the wealth in talent, Portugal only have one third-place finish as their best performance. DR Congo, on the other hand, are making a return here after their 1974 debut. They will not only be targeting a first win at the big stage, but also the first point(s) and goal.

Portugal - DR Congo: Form Analysis
Portugal had a straightforward route to their ninth World Cup appearance. The former European champions topped Group F in the qualification journey, thumping Armenia 9-1 in their final game. Roberto Martinez’s side claimed wins in their two warmup matches, beating Chile and Nigeria with identical 2-1 score lines.
Those, and their earlier 2-0 win against the USA in March, see Portugal head here on three straight wins and a very confident outfit. The Portuguese are actually unbeaten in five games, four being wins, and the other a 0-0 draw with World Cup co-hosts Mexico.
Portugal are making a seventh straight World Cup appearance; DRC are on just their second.
DR Congo’s route to the World Cup was one of the longest, as the Leopards had to book their slot through the intercontinental playoff. In the CAF region, they finished below Senegal in Group B, sending them to the CAF playoffs. They defeated Cameroon and Nigeria there and proceeded to Mexico for the final playoff tournament, where they beat Jamaica to this ticket.
The long road wasn’t the only marker to DR Congo’s run; they’ve had to deal with news of an Ebola outbreak back at home. That caused the cancellation of one of their preparation matches and changes in location for another. Still, the African side will hope to rise above that despite failing to win any of their two warmup games. They drew with Denmark (0-0) and lost 2-1 against Chile.

Portugal & DR Congo Squad Analysis
There isn’t a more recognizable player in this Portuguese side than Cristiano Ronaldo. The Al Nassr forward is making a sixth World Cup appearance, aged 41. The team’s skipper has scored a record 143 goals in a record 226 caps for his nation. Ronaldo will definitely benefit from the presence of Bruno Fernandes, who had a great individual campaign at Manchester United last season.
Fernandes was the top assist provider with 21, and Portuguese fans will hope he carries that form here. Portugal will not be short of creativity in midfield, with the PSG duo of Vitinha and Joao Neves in the squad. The team definitely has the quality to win the title.
Ronaldo is the only player to score in five different World Cups; he has eight goals in 22 WC games.
In terms of team profile, DR Congo can’t get anywhere close to Portugal. However, they pride themselves on capable individual players and the ability to stick together as a unit. This match right away pits the African side as the underdog and will mostly be in defensive mode.
They do have defenders capable of delivering at this stage, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, and Arthur Masuaku, all with Premier League experience. The experienced Chancel Mbemba has been a rock in their defence and this is his chance to do it on the global stage.

Our Portugal vs DR Congo Prediction
While the scales may not be balanced, both these nations have good attacking players who will be on show here. Congo will be parading among others, Newcastle forward Yoanne Wissa. There are more decorated names on the other side, but one stat that stands out is both teams rarely fail to score.
Favorites Portugal will want to be cautious lest they be shocked here, having managed just one clean sheet in their last five competitive matches. Our prediction for Portugal v DR Congo is BTTS.
Portugal vs DR Congo Alternative Predictions
Portugal wins
Portugal’s quality is unmatched, not just in this game but when compared to most teams in the tournament. With that, there’s little wonder they are billed favorites here. The former European champions are on seven wins in the last 10 matches, and their latest victory was against an African side. While DR Congo will give them a run for their money, we expect that in the end Portugal will win.
