As France marked 20 years after winning the first of their two World Cup titles, they went on to win the second, at Russia 2018. Now they start the 23rd edition 20 years after narrowly missing the title at Germany 2006. After reaching the last two finals, there is optimism among French supporters that this, once again, is their year.
Les Bleus open their charge against African giants Senegal in a repeat of the Korea/Japan 2002 opener. Back then, Senegal, straight off finishing second at the African Cup of Nations, battled to a 1-0 win over then world champions France. For the French, this year’s tournament holds a lot of significance.
Their 17th World Cup appearance will also be Les Bleus’ eighth in a row as well as Didier Deschamps’ last, as he steps down after the 2026 showpiece. Senegal are among the nations that will be looking to stop France from reaching a third straight World Cup final. With both nations brandishing attacking football, our prediction will back a high-scoring outing.

France - Senegal: Form Analysis
French coach Didier Deschamps has been part of the team both times they were crowned world champions. First it was as a player, then most recently as the coach. Now going into his fourth World Cup finals as manager, Deschamps’ charges are among the favorites.
They are unbeaten in their last seven competitive matches, a run they will be looking to carry here. In their warmup matches, France wrapped up with a 3-1 win against Northern Ireland after earlier falling 2-1 to Ivory Coast. A confident French side will be stepping out for this game, having only lost once in their last 11 matches (9W, 1D).
Senegal’s only previous meeting with France was at the World Cup stage; they won 1-0.
Senegal are a force on their own, having dominated African football, but here they aren’t expected to rattle the world powers. A loss to the USA and a draw with Saudi Arabia in the warmups confirm as much. The Lions of Teranga won the African title earlier in the year but were controversially dethroned by CAF.
On the pitch, they’ve only lost once in the last 12 matches, and with that run, they will be confident enough to stand up to the 2022 finalists. The only time they faced off with France previously, Senegal went on to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. Current coach Pape Thiaw was part of that record-setting team, and here’s his chance for a repeat while in the manager’s seat.

France & Senegal Squad Analysis
France have one of the most complete teams at the 2026 World Cup. However, it is their attack that hogs all the headlines. Skipper Kylian Mbappe is undoubtedly the star man in that forward line. The Real Madrid striker is said to have had a bad season, yet he managed 42 goals.
At these finals, Mbappe’s eyes are set on a few records to cap a difficult season. The 27-year-old is on the brink of becoming France’s highest scorer, trailing Olivier Giroud's 57 by just a goal. He is also the most prolific, active player at the World Cup, with 12 goals at this stage. This tally is only four goals short of Miroslav Klose’s record of 16.
Mbappe has 56 goals for France in 98 appearances.
While France boast of superstar players, Senegal are more of a compact unit. They scored 22 times in the qualifiers and only conceded three. Still, Sadio Mane starred, as he does mostly. The Al Nassr forward netted five of the 22 goals.
Mane was painfully locked out of the 2022 edition after picking up an injury, but he has another chance here. Being in the twilight of his career, his first World Cup might as well be the last, so he will be looking to leave lasting impressions. The 34-year-old is his nation’s leading scorer with 55 goals netted in 127 international matches.

Our France vs Senegal Prediction
France have a rich scoring form in the World Cup, and given the quality of players they carry here, we are likely to see another attacking masterclass. France’s frontline of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise scored a combined 83 goals last season.
Senegal will have to be at their best to handle this attack, as it is expected the trio will start the game. The African giants have their own threat in Sadio Mane and will be hoping their compactness and Mane’s form work just fine. All in all, our prediction for France v Senegal is for more than 2.5 goals.
France vs Senegal Alternative Predictions
France wins
None in the current French team was there when Senegal shocked Les Bleus and the world in 2002. However, there will be revenge up their sleeve as they also seek a flying start in Didier Deschamps' farewell tournament. Sitting 12 places above Senegal in the rankings, France are the overwhelming favorites to not just win but go all the way in the competition. Our second prediction here is for a France win.
