After missing AFCON 2025, Ghana are back at a major tournament, competing at the 2026 World Cup, starting off against Panama. This marks the first match for the two teams in Group L alongside Croatia and England, and it will also be their first-ever meeting. As none of these nations have a clean sheet in their respective last six games, our prediction will major on the goals market.
Both Ghana and Panama have a combined five players on their rosters who have scored at least 10 national team goals. The Black Stars are on their fifth appearance at the world championships and have this as one of their main advantages ahead of this opener. It is therefore not a surprise that they are favored by bookmakers to win this match.
The African heavyweights will be targeting a sixth win at the World Cup, playing their 16th match. Meanwhile, Panama are here for a second appearance and look to improve on their run in Russia in 2018 when they lost all group matches.

Ghana - Panama: Form Analysis
Ghana have only missed one World Cup since their debut in 2006. Coached by experienced tactician Carlos Queiroz, the current Black Stars generation will be looking to emulate the 2010 team. 16 years ago in South Africa, Ghana became only the third African nation to reach the quarter-finals at the time.
It has, however, been downhill since, failing to get out of the group stages and only winning once in six matches. Ghana, ranked 73rd in the world, qualified after winning their CAF qualifying group, masking a poor run that had them miss the 2025 AFCON. In the run up to this tournament, they are winless in six outings. Ghana drew 0-0 with Wales in their most recent fixture after five straight defeats.
Panama conceded 11 times in three matches on their World Cup debut.
This is Panama’s second appearance at a World Cup. The Central American nation’s first was at Russia 2018. A monumental achievement for one of the least populated nations in the world, with fewer than five million people. On the pitch, though, things were far from memorable as Los Canaleros were eliminated in the group stage without a single point.
A few of the players from Russia still remain with the team. They will be keen to put up a better account of themselves, and playing close to home could be a huge advantage. Panama, who lost once in their last four build-up fixtures, qualified after emerging as group winners in the final round of the CONCACAF qualifiers.

Ghana & Panama Squad Analysis
Ghana have called up a 26-man squad dotted with players plying their trades all over Europe. Jordan Ayew is one of them. The experienced forward, who will captain the team, has earned 120 caps, scoring 34 goals. Now 34, Ayew was the youngest in the 2010 team and is the only remaining member.
Villarreal’s Thomas Partey, the second-highest scorer in the current squad, with 15 goals, will miss this match due to a visa issue. Antoine Semenyo, coming off a career-defining season, will be relied upon even more now that Partey is out. The Manchester City forward had 21 goals last season and will hope to carry the form to the World Cup.
Ghana have one member from their debut World Cup appearance, Panama have seven.
Ismael Diaz and Jose Fajardo have each scored 17 times for Panama, making them the highest scorers in the current squad. Fajardo and Jose Luis Rodriguez scored three goals each and were Panama’s top scorers in qualifying.
Panama have a decent number of players plying their trades in North America, which might work to their advantage. Yoel Barcenas, Eric Davis, Ismael Diaz, Fidel Escobar, Anibal Godoy, Amir Murillo, and Jose Luis Rodriguez were all part of Panama’s 2018 squad.

Our Ghana vs Panama Prediction
Our prediction for Ghana v Panama is BTTS. Neither of these nations is favored to qualify from the group. As such, both will understand how crucial a win on matchday one could be. We therefore expect an exciting showdown between two teams that don’t have much separating them.
Ghana struggled in the build-up to the tournament but maintained a strong offensive form. Panama fared better in preparing for the tournament and showed attacking fluidity. Seeing both teams get on the scoresheet is thus a likely outcome.
Ghana vs Panama Alternative Predictions
Panama wins
In our second prediction, we are backing Panama to win. Ghana’s six winless outings ahead of this could have a mental effect, especially after losing five times. Panama, on the other hand, warmed up a bit better and even produced a win against South Africa, one of Africa’s representatives in the tournament. Ghana’s talisman Thomas Partey being locked out might also negatively impact their chances.
