After finally picking up their first World Cup point, the 2026 co-hosts Canada will look for a victory against Qatar on matchday two on Thursday. With all four teams in Group B having identical records after 1-1 results on matchday one, the winner of this fixture could boost their top-two chances. The ‘Reds’ and the ‘Maroon One’ have shown inclination for low-scoring games recently, but will that trend continue?
Canada started their campaign with a tight 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, needing a 78th-minute equalizer. This was their first point in World Cups, having previously lost six games in the 1986 and 2022 editions put together.
Qatar defied all the odds in their 1-1 draw against Switzerland, where their stoppage-time equalizer came after absorbing waves of attacks. The global stage seems to have spurred them, but is it enough to topple another fancied opponent? We look deep into the two setups to present our analysis, team news, and match predictions for you!

Canada - Qatar: Form Analysis
Canada conceded in the 21st minute on matchday one but dug deep to find a late goal from Southampton forward Cyle Larin to draw 1-1 against Bosnia. The result extended their unbeaten run to nine games (W3, D6), their joint-best ever, but they still have work to do.
The ‘Reds’ have failed to convert their chances against Bosnia, having struck 13 shots overall but with an expected goal count of just 1.25. Positively, that was just the fourth time in their last 12 matches that the Canadians have conceded.
Canada hit four shots on target against Bosnia, their most in a World Cup game.
Qatar needed a 94th-minute goal to deny Switzerland at the death in their 1-1 draw. It was a memorable day for the ‘Maroon One’ as they withstood 26 shots, amounting to 3.24 expected goals (xG), before stunning the Swiss.
It was just the second goal in the World Cups for Qatar, who lost all three matches in the previous edition. They are still winless in their last seven matches (D3, L4), although conceding more than one goal in just two games.

Canada & Qatar Squad Analysis
Alphonso Davies missed Canada’s first game of the tournament due to an ongoing hamstring tear. There’s still no clarity on his availability for this game against Qatar, while Moise Bombito’s availability is also a concern, with the defender’s leg injury likely to see him miss all group games.
The hosts are likely to line up in a 4-4-2 formation again, although coach Jesse Marsch has to take a call on striker Jonathan David. He missed a big chance and had just 0.39 xG count against Qatar, while his replacement Promise David assisted the winner.
Larin’s goal came with his first touch and after just 121 seconds.
Goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada was the star of Qatar’s show against Switzerland, although he suffered a scary clash in the 14th minute. He made five saves and kept Qatar in the game, which eventually helped them snatch a point.
The ‘Maroon One’ lined up in a 4-3-3 system, with star player Akram Afif on the left wing. Qatar will be looking for improved performance from Afif, who did not attempt any shots during the match.

Our Canada vs Qatar Prediction
Qatar absorbed the pressure and struck late to sensationally deny Switzerland points in a 1-1 draw on matchday one. Can they repeat that trick against Canada? Mind you, they are likely to bank on their defensive strengths, while the hosts are expected to do all the running. Canada have a mean defence themselves and will push to keep a clean sheet.
The only previous head-to-head was a 2-0 win for Canada in a 2022 friendly. Things could go the same way this time, so our Canada vs Qatar prediction is less than 2.5 goals.
Canada vs Qatar Alternative Predictions
Canada wins
Not many would have given Qatar a chance on matchday one, but here we are – they are on the same number of points as all other three teams in the group. There’s temptation to back them to repeat the dose, but Canada could be a tougher nut to crack, looking at their defensive strengths in recent months. It’s Canada’s game to lose.
