Saudi Arabia started last World Cup with a surprise win over Argentina, but can they repeat those heroics against another South American nation, Uruguay? The ‘Green Falcons’ and ‘La Celeste’ will meet in Florida on Monday, while Spain and Cape Verde are the other teams in Group H of the 2026 World Cup. With goals being a concern for these two teams of late, are we headed for a low-scoring return here?

The Saudis are making their seventh World Cup appearance and a third in a row. They have never crossed the group stage since reaching the round of 16 on debut in 1994, a tournament that was held in the United States!

Uruguay are two-time champions from 1930 and 1950 and have made it past their group on three of their last four appearances in the World Cups. That shouldn’t mask the fact that they exited at the group stage in the 2022 edition and had a below-par finish to their qualification campaign this time. Which of these two struggling sides will manage to regain their composure in the opener? Dig deep with our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

Saudi Arabia - Uruguay: Form Analysis

Saudi Arabia had to fight their way to this World Cup, needing a fourth round in the Asian qualifiers. Their overall record in the qualifiers read W8, D6, L4, which isn’t convincing by their own standards in Asian qualification campaigns.

To make matters worse, they parted ways with Herve Renard and appointed Georgios Donis just 59 days before the start of this tournament. Although they drew 0-0 with Senegal and defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 just before the World Cup, the ‘Green Falcons’ have failed to win six prior games during regulation time (D1, L5).

Uruguay beat Saudi 1-0 in the 2018 World Cup.

The South Americans would take that result now, considering they come into this tournament without their top two all-time top scorers, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani. They finished fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifiers (W7, D7, L4) but have struggled at the fag end of that campaign.

Uruguay won just three of their last 12 qualifiers and have also failed to win any of their last four qualifiers (D3, L1). That defeat was a damning 5-1 result against co-hosts USA in November 2025, still a low point of their preparations.

Saudi Arabia & Uruguay Squad Analysis

Saudi Arabia have no reported major injuries from the preparatory games, which is a boost ahead of this game. Their squad is completely domestically based, with only one player - Saud Abdulhamid - plying his trade abroad.

The Saudis have usually lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with a single striker up ahead, morphing the system into 4-3-2-1. Firas Al-Buraikan is likely to lead the line, with the Al-Ahli striker ending up as Saudi’s top scorer in the qualifiers with five goals.

Darwin Nunez had five goals and two assists for Uruguay in the qualifiers.

That’s the most by any player for them, so coach Marcelo Bielsa will hope Nunez continues that run. Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde is set to lead the team that thrives on a high-intensity, fast possession game.

Bielsa usually lines up his team in a 4-3-3 system with a lone striker playing slightly ahead in the attacking trio. The South Americans are hit by a couple of injuries, as first-team regulars Ronald Araujo and Giorgian de Arrascaeta are ruled out, most likely from all group stage games.

Saudi Arabia - Uruguay Key Points

  1. Ten of Uruguay’s last 13 matches have produced under 2.5 goals.
  2. Uruguay have failed to score in eight of their last 12 competitive matches.
  3. Saudi Arabia have failed to score in three of their last six matches.
  4. Saudi Arabia have scored only nine goals in their last 15 World Cup matches.

Our Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay Prediction

Strangely enough, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay come into this World Cup with management issues. The Saudis made a change at the top with just 49 days to go for the World Cup, while Uruguay have the divisive Bielsa calling the shots and perhaps alienating a few. That shouldn’t take the focus off the fact that both these sides have been struggling in the final third in recent times.

Those troubles could continue here, and that’s why our Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay prediction is less than 2.5 goals.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay Alternative Predictions

Uruguay wins

Odds 1.47

Recent form gives little confidence in backing either side, although the South Americans have a slight edge. Uruguay have won just one of their last eight World Cup opening matches (D4, L3), but this could be their chance to change that record with a victory.
