Argentina will look to kickstart their World Cup title defence in style when they start the 2026 Group J campaign against tricky underdogs Algeria on Tuesday. This match in Kansas City is the first competitive match between ‘La Seleccion’ and the 'Greens', with the winner looking to get an early advantage in a group that also has Austria and Jordan. Considering the attacking outlets at disposal for both teams, are we in for an exciting match full of goals?
The defending champions aren’t unanimous favourites despite starting the tournament with nearly the same team that won in 2022. The ageing unit is a concern, although Lionel Messi could never be discounted despite question marks over his declining form.
Algeria are back on the global stage since 2014 and boast some exciting names in the final third. That gives them enough firepower to spring a surprise or two, but will that be against the South American powerhouses? We present our analysis complete with team news and our predictions.

Argentina - Algeria: Form Analysis
Argentina raced through their qualification campaign, finishing top of the standings (W12, D2, L4). They had the most goals scored (31) and the joint-second best defence (10 conceded), dominating at both ends of the pitch.
They come here with seven wins out of the last seven friendlies, although most of those have come against lower-ranked nations. The only consolation is the ongoing trend of defensive performances, as they have maintained six clean sheets in the process.
The last time Argentina failed to score in a World Cup opener was in 1990.
Algeria are making their fifth appearance at a World Cup and their first since 2014. They ended the qualifiers with just one defeat (W8, D1), while scoring 24 goals in the campaign.
The Algerians lost in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations, with their eventual defeat against Nigeria proving to be their undoing (W3, D1, L1). Since then, Algeria have remained unbeaten in four preparatory matches (W3, D1), keeping a clean sheet each time.

Argentina & Algeria Squad Analysis
Argentina received a boost with ‘keeper Emiliano Martinez back in training and expected to start. Tottenham Hotspur’s Marcos Senesi has been called up to the squad to replace the injured Leonardo Balerdi.
The champions usually line up in a 4-3-2-1 system with Julian Alvarez leading the line, with the electric striker recently rumoured to be a transfer target for Real Madrid. Alvarez’s Atletico Madrid teammate Thiago Almada could be looking to fill the big shoes of Angel di Maria on the wings.
Messi has 13 goals and eight assists in 26 World Cup matches.
Algeria had a massive goalkeeping crisis, with Luca Zidane suffering a fractured jaw and chin while the backup options were sidelined. Thankfully, Zidane – French legend Zinedine’s son – is back with a protective mask.
There are no such concerns at the other end, where their 4-2-3-1 system is led by Mohammed Amoura, who scored 10 goals in 10 qualifiers. Riyad Mahrez will look to fly on the right wing, while the exciting youngster Ibrahim Maza will be the creative no. 10.
