South Africa and the Czech Republic sit at the bottom of Group A following their opening-day losses at the 2026 World Cup. Both nations marking returns at the world stage couldn’t make flying starts, as the Czechs fell to South Korea, while South Africa found co-hosts Mexico too tough to handle. South Africa have now gone winless in six matches, and our prediction tips Czechia to take advantage of that.
After two decades in the cold, the Czechs couldn’t put a winning start to their 10th appearance at the World Cup. Playing their 34th match in this competition, Narodak fell to South Korea despite taking the lead in their opening game.
On the other hand, South Africa failed in their bid for a third win at the World Cup, falling to co-hosts Mexico. That was Bafana Bafana's 10th match at this level and a fourth defeat. Eight of their total World Cup matches have now ended winless, a run Hugo Broos will be looking to address.

Czechia - South Africa: Form Analysis
The Czech Republic couldn’t hold on to their lead against Korea on Matchday 1, suffering a 2-1 defeat to start off their campaign. Their first loss in seven matches sent them third in Group A ahead of the second game.
All focus will now be on claiming three points against South Africa, but defensive shortcomings have to be addressed. Koubek Miroslav’s men have conceded twice in three of their last five outings, while in that run of five games, they haven’t kept a clean sheet. A positive for the side, though, is that they’ve only failed to score once in the last 10 outings.
The only other meeting between these nations ended in a 2-2 draw.
South Africa didn’t just lose their opening game but plunged into even more chaos as far as qualification is concerned. Returning to the tournament after 16 years out, the Bafana Bafana failed to rise to the occasion against a charged Mexico. They conceded either side of half time in a 2-0 loss.
Two goals were not all they conceded in the game; the former African champions also had two players sent off in the second half. Not much was expected from South Africa anyway, but their biggest concern for now will be their current six-game winless run. The defeat to Mexico was their third in that run and the second time in three matches that they failed to score.

Czechia & South Africa Squad Analysis
The Czechs will feel hard done by in the defeat to South Korea. Vladimir Coufal particularly should have been on the winning side after a splendid outing. The winger grabbed the assist for Czechia’s goal with a long throw that was met by skipper Ladislav Krejci’s strong header.
Coufal also had the most deliveries in terms of crosses for the Czech side, pinging in seven deliveries from the right. While he ended up on the losing side, his performance in the game will be a big motivation going into Matchday 2. With the Czech largely dependent on set-pieces, Tomas Soucek will also be crucial here. The West Ham United man had a goal disallowed in the South Korea defeat but will be motivated for this encounter.
SA coach Broos could revert to 4-4-2 after a five-man backline failed against Mexico.
South Africa have to plan for this match without two key players in mind. Midfielders Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were shown straight red cards in the fall to Mexico. Sithole just had a bad day in the office, having been partly to blame for Mexico’s opening goal before bringing down Brian Gutierrez.
With Hugo Broos missing a trusted man in midfield, Teboho Mokoena may be asked to provide cover for Sithole. Meanwhile, Jayden Adams is likely to be restored to the starting team with Zwane out of this encounter.

Our Czechia vs South Africa Prediction
The only time South Africa faced off with Czechia in history, they were a top force in world football. That has changed over the years, and the opening game of their fourth World Cup appearance proved as much, with Bafana Bafana giving a really timid show.
They have the chance to right a few wrongs but will be affected by player unavailability after picking two red cards in their opening game. The Czechs had a more solid, open output in their loss to South Korea, halting their undefeated run. They will have a lot to take from that defeat and a reason to feel they can bounce back here. Our prediction for Czechia v South Africa is that Czechia wins.
Czechia vs South Africa Alternative Predictions
BTTS
After their opening defeats, chances are these two nations will be more attacking on matchday two. South Africa started out all defensive in the opening game, but here they will have to open up and attack more. Focusing on attack may pay off, but at the back they’ll be exposed and prone to conceding.
Having managed just one clean sheet in five games, we aren’t backing the South African defence to completely lock out the Czech. On the other hand, both sides scored in Czechia’s last five outings. They will also try to go all out attacking, and in this case, our second prediction is for BTTS.
