Sunday evening in Philadelphia will see Group E action between Cote d'Ivoire and Ecuador in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as both teams eye second spot in the group. Germany are overwhelming favorite to win this section, while Curacao are expected to finish last. That makes this match between the 'Elephants' and 'La Tri' crucial, and going by the stakes involved, our match prediction is for over 1.5 goals to be scored.
The Ivory Coast have a new crop of exciting players, highlighted by Manchester United's Amad Diallo and Leipzig's Yan Diomande. Ecuador are perhaps one of the strongest defensive units in the tournament, at least on paper, boasting Arsenal's Piero Hincapie, Paris Saint-Germain's Willian Pacho, and Chelsea's Moises Caicedo.
Defensive solidity underlined Ivory Coast's road to this tournament, keeping a clean sheet in all ten World Cup qualifiers. Ecuador conceded just five goals in their 18 CONMEBOL qualifiers and finished second, despite a three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player. Will these two defensively superior teams dish out a tight contest? Look no further than our analysis and team news to find more about match predictions.

Côte d'Ivoire - Ecuador: Form Analysis
Ivory Coast stunned France 2-1 in their last international friendly before the tournament, although it came against a much-rotated Les Bleus. However, it marked their third consecutive victory in friendly matches, with the previous wins against Scotland and South Korea also resulting in clean sheets.
The Elephants have had a sensational qualification campaign, remaining unbeaten (W8, D2) and keeping ten clean sheets to qualify for their first World Cup since 2014. They have managed to score 25 goals in that sequence, although 16 of those came in two matches against Seychelles.
Ivory Coast scored 20 goals in their last seven competitive games.
Ecuador defeated Guatemala 3-0 in their last friendly on Sunday to make it two wins and draws each in their four preparatory matches. That included creditable 1-1 draws against the Netherlands and Morocco, so 'La Tri' will feel optimistic about their chances.
The South Americans ended their last two global appearances with a record of W1, D1, L1 each time. A stronger start this time would be a big bonus, and having secured the nation's best-ever result in World Cup qualifiers gives this side a massive boost.

Côte d'Ivoire & Ecuador Squad Analysis
Clement Akpa has been ruled out of the tournament, with Christopher Operi drafted in as a replacement, although he missed a few league fixtures for Basaksehir in the Turkish league. A bigger concern for the 'Elephants' is the fitness of captain Franck Kessie, although he played more than 60 minutes against France in the friends.
Emerse Fae's side usually lines up in a 4-3-3 system that practically looks like a 4-1-2-2-1 system with Ibrahim Sangare sitting deep and Evann Guessand playing as the lone striker. The buildups will go through Diomande and Amad on the flanks.
Amad scored four and assisted two goals in his last eight national appearances.
Ecuador entered the tournament with no major concerns and have come out unscathed from the friends. Kendry Paez suffered a knock against Guatemala and was substituted, but the management confirmed he's fine.
'La Tri' have usually lined up in a 4-4-2 under Sebastian Beccacece but have shown tactical flexibility to change into a 4-4-1-1, 4-2-3-1, or even a more defensive 5-4-1 system. All eyes will be on captain Enner Valencia, who is their all-time top scorer with 49 goals.
