The Netherlands will take on Japan in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup in Group F. While in their respective confederations these are heavyweights, they come to the global showpiece as dark horses. The close nature of their rankings corresponds with how tight defensively these nations have been. They rarely concede more than once, and our prediction is for a slim goal margin to settle the game.
In the FIFA rankings, the two sit 11 places apart, the Netherlands being seventh and Japan 11th. The Samurai Blue are competing at this stage for the eighth time in their history. They were the first to qualify apart from the three host nations, and they did it with three games to spare.
Meanwhile, the Oranje are coming to this stage for the 12th time. Beaten three times in the World Cup final, the Dutch will be keen on changing that narrative this time. They finished their qualifying campaign unbeaten and top of Group G.

Netherlands - Japan: Form Analysis
After seeing their 10-game unbeaten run ended by Algeria, the Netherlands returned to winning ways just before resuming competitive action. It wasn’t an easy ride for the Dutch as they needed a late goal to beat Uzbekistan 2-1 in their final friendly match. The Oranje scored from two penalties and will surely want to improve on an unconvincing output.
That marked their first win in three matches, and they’ve now failed to keep a clean sheet in four. To use this run as a basis to go four matches unbeaten against Japan looks risky. After two straight wins over the Asian giants, the Dutch lost a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Japan in their latest meeting in 2013.
The Netherlands have won 54.5% of their total 55 World Cup matches.
Japan have played less than half of the Netherlands’ total matches at the World Cup, only winning seven of their 25. The Asian nation will, however, be confident of improving that statistic, as they come here on a very confident footing. The Samurai Blue are undefeated in seven matches, a run that includes six straight victories.
In each of their last five matches, they recorded clean sheets, and their last three wins were against European nations. One of those was recorded away against England, having earlier beaten Scotland on the road as well. In their last game before the World Cup, Japan recorded a third straight 1-0 victory.

Netherlands & Japan Squad Analysis
The Netherlands have had to make a late call-up after being rocked by an injury to Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber. The right-back failed to recover from a groin injury picked up in a busy season with his club. As a result, he has been replaced by Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who was on the waiting list.
On more positive news, the Dutch will have their all-time leading scorer, Memphis Depay, available after recovering from an earlier thigh injury. In Ronald Koeman’s bid to preserve the 32-year-old, he used him for only 45 minutes in two warmup games.
The Dutch have been forced into a late call-up following Jurrien Timber’s injury.
Japan could be without their skipper Wataru Endo in this game. The Liverpool midfielder has been battling a foot injury for the better part of the year and doesn’t seem to be 100% fit. After his injury in February, he made a return in the friendly game against Iceland but could only last 45 minutes before being replaced by Ayumu Seko.
The Samurai Blue may miss more leadership on the pitch after veteran defender Maya Yoshida was withdrawn early in the Iceland warmup. They are already without the injured Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma, who wasn’t called up at all.

Our Netherlands vs Japan Prediction
The Dutch meet the Samurai Blue for the second time at the World Cup finals. This is Japan’s chance to avenge their loss in this matchup in 2010. Back then they suffered a 1-0 defeat, and the Netherlands will be keen on extending their dominance in this fixture.
We can’t tell how that will go, but looking at the two teams’ trends, this might not only be a low-scoring affair but also be defined by tight ranges. Neither side has been conceding a lot, and our prediction for the Netherlands v Japan is for a 1-2 goal margin.
Netherlands vs Japan Alternative Predictions
Japan wins
The Netherlands have an edge in this fixture, winning twice in the last three matches pitting the two nations. However, they’ve been a bit shaky in the run up to this tournament. The Dutch failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four matches and managed just one win in their last three games.
On the other hand, Japan’s preparation for the World Cup was premised on defensive solidity. The Asian nation comes here on a better run, and our second prediction is for Japan to win.
