Australia and Turkey are outsiders in Group D of the 2026 World Cup and will look to start their engagements with a win on Saturday in Vancouver. The Socceroos are playing their sixth World Cup in a row and reached the round of 16 in the last edition, while the 'Crescent Stars' are in just their third-ever global tournament, with 2002's third-place finish being their best. With Australia's recent outings defined by tight, low-scoring matches and a number of increasingly sturdy defensive performances from Turkey, our prediction reflects a game which may see goals hard to come by.
After an indifferent qualification campaign, Australia have struggled in the friendlies. Failure to win against Mexico and Switzerland underlines their difficulties in breaking strong sides.
Turkey had to navigate the play-offs to earn their ticket to this tournament, although coming second in a group behind Spain is not a bad effort. They will fancy their chances, but does the recent record give them a shot in the arm? Time to find that and more about their form, team news, and match predictions in our preview.

Australia - Turkiye: Form Analysis
Australia had a perfect second round in the Asian qualifiers, winning all six without conceding. The third round was a bit more challenging, but Australia's overall record in the qualifiers (W11, D4, L1) underlines their credentials.
The Socceroos will be worried about their form in recent friendlies, as they lost four of their last seven matches (W2, D1). The two victories came against Curacao and Cameroon, and with due regards, those sides are unlikely to be at the same level as the teams they play in this group.
Six of Australia's last 12 matches produced exactly one goal.
Turkey came second behind Spain in the UEFA qualifiers, losing just once (W4, D1). They continued that form in the play-offs, defeating Romania and Kosovo by 1-0 each, to qualify for the World Cup for just the third time in their history.
The 'Crescent Stars' rounded off their commitments in friendlies with wins over North Macedonia (4-0) and Venezuela (2-1). With seven wins and a draw in their last eight games, Turkey are silently making the right noises ahead of the World Cup.

Australia & Turkiye Squad Analysis
Australia usually line up in a 3-4-2-1 system, which morphs into a 5-4-1 against stronger teams to stifle the midfield. Their hopes of hitting Turkey hard could fall on the youngster Nestory Irankunda, who could line up on the left wing.
There are still question marks over the availability of Harry Souttar, with the defender having only recently recovered from an Achilles injury. In his absence, it could be Cameron Burgess deputizing.
Tete Yengi has two goals in his last three appearances across country and club.
Turkey usually lines up in their favored 4-2-3-1 system, with their attackers given freedom in the final third. Hakan Calhanoglu will look to dictate the tempo from the central midfield, while the onus of creativity will be on Arda Guler and Alper Yilmaz.
That shouldn't take the limelight away from Kenan Yildiz. The Juventus forward has 11 goals and 10 assists this season in club competitions, but questions remain over his availability after he missed the last two friendlies due to a calf injury.
