Stage 13 of La Vuelta looks on paper like it will be a stage that is going to favour a breakaway with the peloton almost immediately facing a Category 1 climb with another of those and a Cat 2 on the way to the finish. That suggests the perfect terrain for a rider like Wout van Aert.

A climbing stage with a potential group finish up a slight incline means that the first name that springs to mind is Wout van Aert. He finished third on Stage 7 which was a fairly similar stage, although with a much tougher finish. This one should suit him better as part of a small group sprint.

One man who picks his breakaways with care is Axel Laurance. He has only been on two so far this season, one in the Tour de la Provence and one in the tour of the Basque Country. Laurance won both of those stages so he is a bet in play if he goes on the attack.

It will be interesting to see if Christophe Laporte can get himself over the climbs. He would not be the strongest climber in the field but he would be a very strong sprinter in a decimated group on the type of finish this stage provides, so he needs to be considered.

There have been two top 10 finishes so far in La Vuelta for Finn Fisher-Black on days that required a bit of climbing before a mass finish. Another similar stage here which makes him of some interest.
