Second seeded Carlos Alcaraz takes on the seventh seed Andrey Rublev in the Madrid Masters quarter-finals. Alcaraz has won this outdoor clay court tournament for the past two years. Another win this year will see him become the first player to win this title three years in a row. The world number three is yet to win a clay court tournament this year. He did win the hard court Indian Wells tournament but his best result on clay has been a semi-final in Buenos Aires. The defence of his Madrid title began strongly with straight sets wins over Alexander Shevchenko and Thiago Seyboth Wild with only nine games lost. Tuesday's last 16 match saw him take on the 23rd seed Jan-Lennard Struff in a repeat of last year's final. It was a tough match for Alcaraz but he came through it in three sets with the last two both going to tie-breaks. He won his only previous match against Rublev but that was on a hard court.

World number seven Andrey Rublev has had some disappointing results in recent weeks. The Russian lost in both his first matches in both Monte Carlo and Barcelona. That made it four successive defeats for Rublev. He's 12th in the LIve ATP Race and can go as high as ninth if beating the defending champion. It's gone better for him in Madrid with wins over Facundo Bagnis, 27th seeded Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina and 24th seeded Tallon Griekspoor. He's yet to lose a set in this tournament but one set against Griekspoor did require a tie-break. This is his second quarter-final in Madrid, the other being in 2022. We tip Alcaraz to prevent him reaching his first semi-final with a straight sets victory.
