One final piece of pride is up for grabs after dreams were shattered as one-time World Cup champions, France and England, battle it out for bronze in a third-place playoff showdown. A battle of pride, pain and one final World Cup statement

When France and England arrived at the 2026 World Cup, their ambitions stretched far beyond a third-place finish. The dream was to conclude the tournament with a gold medal, but that won't be possible anymore after the two giants on football's biggest stage fell short in the semi-finals.

For some, it may be a fixture that lacks the glamour of a final, considering their nations are competing for bronze and not the major prize they had hoped to claim. However, for the two European giants in question it's a chance to restore their pride and the tournament on a winning tournament.

Les Bleus' impressive run leading up to the semi-finals saw them as genuine contenders to snatch the crown from the reigning 2022 champions, Argentina. This could've seen them end an eight-year wait for another World Cup triumph while bidding farewell to Didier Deschamps, whose spell has been nothing but short of remarkable.

Didier Deschamps' record as France manager:

  • Matches managed: 186
  • Wins: 121
  • Draws: 35
  • Losses: 30
  • Win ratio: 65%

For a nation that had previously reached the finals on two successive occasions, France couldn't make it this time around as their semi-final matchup against 2010 champions Spain ended in heartbreak, suffering a 2-0 defeat at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Complimented by their exhilarating attacking play, which has made them the second-highest scorers at this tournament, the semi-final defeat marked the first time in seven games that France had been unable to score."

England, meanwhile, also had a terrific run to the semi-finals, though the burden of expectation was nowhere near as heavy as it was for France.

Thomas Tuchel's charges were dreaming of reaching a third major tournament final in five years when they stepped into the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta against the reigning champions, Argentina. Success could have also put them on the brink of reaching the World Cup final for the first time in 60 years.

It almost appeared as if that dream would materialise after taking the lead through Anthony Gordon's effort ten minutes into the second half, but a momentary lapse in concentration and Thomas Tuchel opting for a defensive approach late in the game cost them dearly, resulting in a 2-1 defeat.

Now all that's left for England is the bronze medal. Fourteen unique nations have come out on top in third-place finishes, including their counterparts, France, who sit on two triumphs and are just two away from matching Germany's record of four wins.

A Third Place clash fueled by revenge and history

thomas tuchel celebrating with the fans after england winThe third-place playoff is all about restoring pride and an opportunity to end a major tournament on a high note, and that's what France and England are aiming for in Saturday's fixture.

Both teams are no strangers in this tournament, with France making their fourth appearance, which is currently the joint most alongside Germany, while England sits on just three overall.

Les Bleus have won two out of their last three so far, and for the Three Lions, it has been a hurdle having lost each of their last two, with their most recent being a 2-0 defeat against Belgium in 2018.

Another defeat for Thomas Tuchel's charges could see them equal Uruguay's record for most losses in this tournament (3). Check out what our SportyTrader betting experts have to say about this intriguing matchup in our France vs England prediction for more insights.

France and England are meeting for the fourth time at the World Cup, with their most recent meeting in 2022 witnessing the former win 2-1 in the quarter-finals and eventually reach the finals, only to lose to Argentina on penalties.

France vs England past World Cup meetings:

  • 20 June 1966 (Group stage) - England 2:0 France
  • 16 June 1982 (Group stage) - England 3:1 France
  • 10 December 2022 (Quarter-final) - England 1:2 France

It's evident that England, who have proven their progress on football's biggest stage with this new generation of players, have been the dominant team in this fixture, making them likely to exact revenge for their recent meeting.

Player Focus: The Prince of Pace vs The King of Kane

Driven by an exhilarating attacking approach, France has been among the tournament's most dangerous sides in front of goal. They currently rank second for goals scored in the tournament (16) and are three behind leaders Argentina.

Behind their attacking brilliance stands Kylian Mbappe, who has scored eight goals and contributed three assists and is in the race for the Adidas Golden Boot award despite this being a third-place playoff showdown.

His explosive pace, which has outpaced defenders, has been the key ingredient to a successful 2026 World Cup campaign. He is clocking 37.61 km/h and ranks 34th in this type of category.

The Frenchman is also the second highest scorer at the World Cup with 20 goals and is one away from matching Argentina's Lionel Messi's record 21 goals. At just 27 years old, there's still time for him to better that record and etch his name in the history books.

Harry Kane is also very much in the race for the Golden Boot with six goals scored in this tournament, making him the joint third highest scorer alongside his countryman Jude Bellingham.

Kane's goal against co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 marked his 14th goal at this tournament. He is currently the joint fifth highest scorer, and another strike against France could see him match Ronaldo Nazario, who sits in fourth with 15 goals.
