It's time for the match that no team ever wants to play in. France take on England in the Bronze match in the 2026 World Cup. Both Les Bleus and the Three Lions are still recovering from their semi-final defeats. France have looked the better side in this tournament and our prediction is they will win this match.
Both of these countries would rather be on their way home to prepare for the new season. Instead, we have this rather meaningless match to decide who finishes third in the World Cup. It's totally worthless, perhaps if the match saw the winners automatically qualify for the 2030 finals, that would add some importance to it. France were beaten by a superior Spanish side on Tuesday night and at least they have a day more than their opponents to recover.
England blew a 1-0 lead over Argentina on Wednesday evening and ended up being beaten 2-1. Rather than going for a second goal that would have likely secured their place in the final, they sat back and tried to hold onto their lead. Their coach was far too defensive minded and it will now be 64 years of hurt for the Three Lions.

France - England: Form Analysis
France were the losing finalists in 2022 and many pundits believed that this year they would lift the World Cup for the first time since
Les Bleus won Group I with a 100 percent record with victories over Senegal, Iraq and Norway. At least three goals were scored in each of their wins (ten in total) with just two goals conceded. A 3-0 win over Sweden followed in the last 32 and then they battled hard to beat Paraguay 1-0 to reach the last eight.
A third successive clean sheet (the fourth in five games) was kept when they defeated Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals. Their hopes of a second straight final ended in Tuesday's semi-final as Spain (who are my tip to win the final) beat them 2-0. That loss ended a run of seven straight wins for France
This is the fourth time they have played in this play-off rather than the following day's final. Two of the previous three have been won.
64 years of hurt.
Not since 1966 has England lifted the World Cup and it won't be until the next decade that they have a chance to win another final. England won Group L with seven points from their three games. An impressive performance against Croatia was followed by a draw with Ghana and a 2-0 win over Panama. They had to come from behind to beat DR Congo in the last 16 and then had a thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico, before again coming from a goal down to beat Norway.
England's dreams of winning the World Cup sixty years after their only triumph came to an end on Wednesday evening. A 1-0 lead turned into a 2-1 defeat. That was their first loss in nine games and was their third semi-final loss since that victory 60 years ago. Both of their previous play-off games saw them finish fourth.
They have lost their last two games against France, most recently in the 2022 World Cup knock-out stages with Harry Kane missing a penalty. England last beat France in a friendly 11 years ago with six of the last nine against Les Bleus being lost.

France & England Squad Analysis
Bang went the Bank Holiday in England and departing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer didn't get to go to the World Cup final. All of that disappeared as England lost to Argentina in Wednesday's semi-final. Now they have to pick themselves up as they try to secure their highest finishing position since winning the World Cup in 1966.
This is going to be a difficult matchf for both teams. The inquests into their semi-final defeats are still ongoing and now they have to play anoher game. It will be an emotional one for several players who are unlikely to ever play in another World Cup finals.
For England, that is likely to include Harry Kane (currently needing five more games to become England's most capped player), Jordan Pickford, Dan Burn, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney. England's coach is likely to stay on for the next Euros. Jordan Henderson is already out with his broken wrist and John Stones is a doubt.
Jarell Quansah is available again after serving his two-match ban. There are still some worries over whether Bellingham will be able to play afer his post-match antics aganst Argentina. Aside from that, England have no worries apart from Henderson being ruled out.
Farewell to Deschamps.
The 14-year reign of Didier Deschamps as French coach will end on Saturday. Players such as Lucas Digne, N'Golo Kante and Lucas Hernandez are also likely to be playing their last World Cup finals game if they are selected.
It will be interesting to see the line-ups that both coaches select. Do they decide to blood some players who are yet to start a match in this tournament and give those players we've mentioned a chance to play their final game?
William Saliba has a back problem and is unlikely to play so Maxence Lacros may come into the side.
The Golden Boot is still up for grabs. Mbappe is level on eight goals with Lionel Messi. Both Kane and Bellingham are two goals behind.

Our France vs England Prediction
This could just be a case of getting this game out of the way and going home. Does it really matter if you finish third or fourth in the World Cup? Both teams will be so disappointed at losing their semi-finals, especially England who long to at least reach a final for the first time since 1966.
It is probably best to leave placing your wager on this game until you see the team line-ups. France have been more impressive than England during this tournament and our main France v England prediction is France wins.
