Argentina vs Switzerland: Is this a repeat of the 2014 World Cup?

Argentina and Switzerland are set to lock horns at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in what will be the final quarter-final fixture at the 2026 World Cup. With the semi-final spot up for grabs, this upcoming clash brings together two sides with different ambitions, as reigning champions Argentina are looking to defend their title and become the third nation to do so, while Switzerland are seeking a maiden semi-final appearance.

This fixture is a rematch of the 2014 World Cup when the 2022 Champions, Argentina, came out on top in a 1-0 victory after extra time in the Round of 16. Angel Di Maria scored the winning goal, assisted by Lionel Messi. However, the latter is the sole survivor from that famous encounter who remains part of Argentina’s current setup, which undeniably adds a layer of nostalgia.

Road to the quarter-finals:

Stage/RoundArgentina ResultsSwitzerland Results
Matchday 1Argentina 3-0 AlgeriaQatar 1-1 Switzerland
Matchday 2Argentina 2-0 AustriaSwitzerland 4-1 Bosnia & Herzegovina
Matchday 3Jordan 1-3 ArgentinaSwitzerland 2-1 Canada
Round of 32Argentina 1-1 Cape Verde (Argentina won 2-1 after extra time)Switzerland 2-0 Algeria
Round of 16Argentina 3-2 EgyptSwitzerland 0-0 Colombia (Switzerland won 4-3 on penalties)

Despite maintaining a five-match unbeaten run on football's biggest stage, La Seleccion have been most tested during their journey to the quarter-finals, particularly in the knockout stages. Cape Verde, making their debut at this tournament, forced the reigning champions to dig deep, pushing them into extra time in the Round of 32.

Unfortunately, a Diney Borges own goal in the 111th minute was the lifeline Lionel Scaloni's men needed to escape danger and progress to the next stage. It was the same situation against Egypt, who made life difficult for them after the Pharaohs went two goals up. A Lionel Messi-inspired performance, however, saw the team battle back from two goals down to secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory.

Switzerland, meanwhile, have proven to be a difficult opponent to overcome with their defensive organisation being key to their success at this tournament. The European nation finished the group stages with a three-match unbeaten run and cruised through the two knockout stages without conceding a single goal.

First was a 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Round of 32, followed by a 4-3 penalty shootout win over Colombia in the Round of 16 after a goalless draw in regulation time. Those triumphs have highlighted Nati's resilience and ability to punish opponents in transition, something they'll need once again in Saturday's clash against the
 reigning champions.

Head-to-Head: Who has the upper hand?

lionel messi celebrates after scoring during 2026 world cupOld acquaintance are about to meet for the third time on football's biggest stage and for the first time since their famous clash in the 2014 World Cup Round of 16. In that meeting, nothing separated the two teams, with the score ending level after regulation time. Thanks to Messi's brilliance and Angel Di Maria's clinical finishing, they secured a 1-0 victory in extra time.

That defeat was a bitter pill to swallow for Switzerland, which didn't look threatening in the final third and lacked the cutting edge needed to finish off the game. The 2014 World Cup meeting was the second time that the two sides locked horns on football's biggest stage, with the first encounter in 1966, Argentina won 2-0 at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield. It's evident that the reigning champions have the upper hand in this fixture. Still, Switzerland's recent performances suggest they are better equipped than ever to challenge Argentina on the grandest stage.

Player Focus: No Messi for Nati as Lionel seeks to break new grounds

With France's Kylian Mbappe shining on the grandest stage in world football, Lionel Messi, 39, has also been the centre of attention for Argentina, showing that greatness has no age limit.

Equipped with leadership and match-winning qualities, Messi is currently the joint top scorer in the 2026 World Cup. He has scored eight of Argentina's 14 goals and dished out one assist. This has firmly put the Argentinian in the race for the Golden Boot, an award that has eluded him in the past five editions.

Messi's latest strike against Egypt in the Round of 16 made him the first player in World Cup history to score in six successive knockout-stage games.

Lionel Messi stats at the 2026 World Cup:

  • Goals scored: 8 (1st)
  • Assists: 1 (34th)
  • Attempts at goal: 29 (2nd)
  • Pass accuracy: 78%

The glorious protagonist has now scored a record 21 World Cup goals in his legendary career. Apart from that, he is one goal away from equaling Brazil’s Ademir Menezes' record of nine goals in a single World Cup tournament.

This is a milestone that has stood untouched among South American players since the 1950 edition. Can the legendary Lionel Messi reach this milestone this Saturday?
