Seventh seed Petra Martic and the unseeded Rebeka Masarova will square off in the first round of the Auckland Open. The winner will then set up a second-round showdown with either Kayla Day or Yuan Yue. Rebeka Masarova was a losing finalist here last season. She will be hoping to go one better this time around and win her maiden tour crown. The Spaniard had a strong 2023 campaign and finished ranked 65th in the WTA with a 38-23 record. Her total wins were the second most she has ever managed in a single season in her career. She compiled a 16-11 record on outdoor hard courts with one of her two finals coming on the surface.
Petra Martic struggled with a lack of consistency all through 2023 and won just two more games than the total she lost. The Croat compiled a 24-22 record and finished the year ranked 41st in the world. A two-time tour champion, Martic managed only one final appearance and this was in Linz. She struggled mostly on outdoor hard courts and finished with an 8-13 record on the surface. Martic is back in Auckland after a four-year hiatus. She has never gone past the second round in three main draw appearances but will be hoping this is the season she does.
