After starting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 with identical defeats, Angola and Zimbabwe square off on matchday two with their tournament hopes possibly on the line. This Group B match in Marrakesh on Boxing Day between the ‘Red Devils’ and the ‘Warriors’, both on zero points, comes with our prediction of both teams scoring goals.
Angola started the tournament with a 2-1 defeat to South Africa, while Zimbabwe were overpowered by Egypt by the same score. With the top two teams advancing to the knockouts and the third team holding on to their chances, the loser here could be virtually knocked out of the race.
Both teams had contrasting routes to the finals, with Angola remaining unbeaten in the qualifiers and Zimbabwe staying defiant and losing only once. Even in their match against the much-fancied Egypt, Zimbabwe held their own for a long time before wilting under pressure. Can they take heart from that and push the fancied Angolans? Read more for our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

Angola - Zimbabwe: Form Analysis
Angola started their finals tournament with a 2-1 loss to South Africa on matchday one. A 21st-minute goal gave South Africa the lead, and although Angola equalised in the 35th minute through Show, a 79th-minute winner from South Africa sealed the deal.
It was a rude awakening for the Red Devils, who were unbeaten in the qualifiers (W4, D2). Their place in the knockouts isn’t yet a certainty, and anything less than a win would push them to the danger zone.
Angola won only three of their last nine matches (D2, L4).
Zimbabwe showed promise in their tournament opener against Egypt, taking a 20th-minute lead through Prince Dube. Egypt were frustrated by some top saves, but a 64th-minute strike from Omar Marmoush and a stoppage-time winner from Mo Salah saved them the blushes.
The Warriors have won only two of their last 18 matches, including friendlies (D6, L10), and may struggle to add to that winning count here. That said, Zimbabwe could relish frustrating another top opponent.

Angola & Zimbabwe Squad Analysis
Angola will be without forward Zini for this match. The rest of the squad are fit, and also there are no suspensions in the squad. That could see them tinker with their combination, although they featured in a 3-1-4-2 system against South Africa.
That system saw Show start slightly ahead of the three defenders, although they could revert to a more conventional 4-2-3-1 here. That would see M’Bala Nzola and Gelson Dala lead their front line.
Fredy has two goals and three assists in his last four games for club and Angola.
Zimbabwe have no confirmed absentees and is likely to be at full strength. They lined up in a 4-1-4-1 system against Egypt to stifle their attack and frustrate their front line with a five-man midfield unit.
They could revert to a more common 4-2-3-1 formation here to take advantage of a vulnerable Angolan defensive unit. Either way, Prince Dube could continue to be the focal point of their attacks, as he scored four goals in his last five games for club and country.

Our Angola vs Zimbabwe Prediction
Angola and Zimbabwe both lost their opening matches of this competition by a 2-1 scoreline, although in contrasting manners. Angola had high hopes of riding on their unbeaten qualifying campaign but fell to South Africa. Zimbabwe frustrated Egypt for long periods and even took the lead but eventually lost. Angola have Egypt waiting on matchday three, so they can’t leave their qualification hopes for late in the day. Zimbabwe will hope they can do better than on matchday one.
Both teams are likely to fancy their chances in the final third, and our Angola vs Zimbabwe prediction is BTTS.
