Benin and Botswana meet on matchday two of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on matchday two, with the loser likely to be eliminated early from the competition. This match on Saturday between the third-placed Cheetahs and the fourth-placed Zebras comes with our prediction of less than 2.5 goals.
A 1-0 defeat to DR Congo started Benin’s tournament, while Botswana were beaten 3-0 by Senegal. With Senegal and DR Congo meeting in the other matchday two fixture, the loser of this match could be facing early elimination. Benin will end their group engagements on matchday three against Senegal, while Botswana face DR Congo on the same day.
It was a disappointing start to the tournament for both these sides, but nothing out of the ordinary. Recent form has been dire for Benin, while Botswana have also been struggling for goals and results. The Cheetahs have never won an AFCON finals match within regulation time, while the Zebras have lost all four of their AFCON finals fixtures, including on matchday one. Which script will change here? Benin - Botswana: Form Analysis
Benin were back in the AFCON finals after a six-year absence but fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of DR Congo on matchday one. That was their third defeat in a row, all coming without scoring.
That puts a cloud of uncertainty over Benin’s chances of progression, as the Cheetahs have failed to win their 15 matches in the AFCON finals within regulation time (D5, L10).
Benin won just three of their last 14 international matches (D4, L7).
Botswana couldn’t halt tournament favourites Senegal, falling to a 3-0 defeat in their opening fixture. They failed to land even a single shot on target in that game. The result extended their poor recent form, landing five defeats in six recent internationals (D1).
Their only previous AFCON finals appearance was in 2012 when they lost three games in a row and crashed out of the group stage. A similar fate awaits them here if things don’t improve, because the Zebras have won only one of their last nine competitive matches (D3, L5).

Benin & Botswana Squad Analysis
Benin didn’t have Marcel Dandjinou and Junior Olaitan available for selection on matchday one but could have them back in contention here. Three players received yellow cards in the first match for Benin.
They lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation on matchday one with Aiyegun Tosin leading the line. The experienced Jodel Dossou started on the wings and was one of the players to be carded but will look to add to his count of nine international goals.
Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko made 14 saves against Senegal!
Those numbers look monumental despite the 3-0 loss, as the defeat could have been by a higher margin. They don’t have any fresh injuries, and the Zebras saw two of their players getting carded in that defeat.
Botswana lined up in a solid 4-1-4-1 formation against Senegal, trying to cut space on the wings. While that hasn’t helped, they may use the same system or go back to a 4-2-3-1 formation to add more defensive stability. Either way, it could be Omaatla Kebatho leading the line.

Our Benin vs Botswana Prediction
Ahead of the first-ever match between them, both Benin and Botswana are struggling for goals. Benin have failed to score in six of their last eight AFCON matches, including on matchday one. That was also the third consecutive game that they couldn’t find a goal. Botswana have been equally goal-shy and have failed to score even once in three of their last five matches. That included the 3-0 defeat to Senegal, where they were swamped by the favourites.
Lack of goals could be a recurring theme here, and our Benin vs Botswana prediction is less than 2.5 goals.

There’s frankly very little to separate these sides, who started the tournament with defeats ‘to nil’. The script may not change immediately with very little time between these games. A draw could be on the cards.
