After winning starts to their respective 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns, Senegal and DR Congo square off on matchday two on Saturday. This Group D match between the first-placed ‘Lions of Teranga’ and the second-placed Leopards comes with our prediction of both teams scoring goals.
Senegal won 3-0 against Botswana on matchday one and will end their group stage fixtures on matchday three against Benin. DR Congo won 1-0 against Benin and will end against Botswana, so the winner here is virtually guaranteed the top spot.
Starting the tournament as one of the favourites and being FIFA’s highest-ranked African nation hasn’t put extra pressure on Senegal. They have lived up to that billing in the first game and will back their record of seven wins from the last eight games. DR Congo have won their last six internationals and will be confident of their chances, although they have been scoring just enough in recent games. Will that continue against Senegal in this intriguing fixture? Read more for our analysis, team news, and match predictions.

Senegal - DR Congo: Form Analysis
Nicolas Jackson scored once in each half to lead Senegal to a comfortable 3-0 win over Botswana on matchday one. That was their seventh win in the last eight matches, including friendlies, losing only against Brazil in that sequence.
The Lions have won just one AFCON title in 2021 and will hope to add to that count, especially with their recent scoring run. Five of their recent seven wins saw them score at least three goals, which gives them an edge.
Senegal won 3-2 when these sides last met in September.
That was in the World Cup qualifiers, and DR Congo went on to win their next six matches in a row, one via penalties over Nigeria, to qualify for the World Cup. Four of those wins have come by a 1-0 score, so the Leopards have been scoring just enough to edge out contests.
Their matchday one win over Benin was also settled by a 16th-minute strike from Theo Bongonda, making it a fifth game in their last six fixtures to see them score exactly once during regular time.

Senegal & DR Congo Squad Analysis
Senegal have no injury concerns in the camp and have a full squad to choose from. Sunderland’s Habib Diarra was allowed to join the squad late and could be in contention to make the XI here, or at least get some game time.
The Senegalese otherwise looked settled in their first game, appearing in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Veteran Sadio Mane started on the left flank, with the energetic Jackson starting as the lone forward. Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye slotted in behind him to complete their forward line.
Jackson has six goals in his last six international matches.
DR Congo also appears to have no fresh absentees. Yoanne Wissa is a big miss for them, with the striker just returning to competitive action with Newcastle United. They will continue to put hopes on Cedric Bakambu and Elia Meschak for impact.
They stacked the midfield in a 4-1-4-1 formation against Benin and will likely do so here as well. Right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka could look to make overlapping runs with Bongonda, their scorer from matchday one.

Our Senegal vs DR Congo Prediction
Senegal were one of the pre-tournament favourites, and they lived up to that billing on matchday one. The 3-0 win over Botswana was in line with expectations, and another win here over Congo will more or less confirm their playoff qualification. Having scored at least three goals in five of their last eight matches, the Senegalese will fancy another scoring encounter. Congo squeezed past Benin 1-0, and they scored exactly once in five of their last six games.
Going by how these teams played each other recently, our Senegal vs DR Congo prediction is BTTS.
Senegal vs DR Congo Alternative Predictions
Senegal to win and BTTS
Senegal came back from two goals down the last time they met Congo to eventually win 3-2. Their recent scoring form should be further evidence of their strong credentials, and they should win with both teams scoring goals.
