Pavel Kotov bids to knock 32nd seed Jordan Thompson out of the Madrid Masters. This is a second round match in this outdoor clay court tournament with the winner up against either top seed Jannik Sinner or unseeded Lorenzo Sonego. Kotov had a good win over qualifier Albert Ramos Vinolas in round one without dropping a set. That win took Kotov up to 66th in the live rankings which is only five places below his career-high. He's in the second round of this Masters tournament for the first time. The Russian has had some good form on clay this year with the semi-finals reached in Marrakech. He also won a clay court Challenger Tour event in San Marino in 2022.

Jordan Thompson is the world number 33 and that's just a single place below the career-high he was at two months ago. The Australian needs to win a couple of matches in this tournament to equal or surpass that career high. His record on clay isn't that great with only one match won at Roland Garros in his last seven visits and no wins in this tournament. Thompson is playing his third clay court tournament of the year. His first was the US Clay Court Championship in Houston where he made it to the last eight. where he lost to eventual champion Frances Tiafoe. Last week in Barcelona he was beaten in the last 16 again losing to the player who went on to win the title, this time Casper Ruud. Kotov isn't the likely winner of this Madrid Masters but we believe he can win this match.
