Second seed Elise Mertens is on course to defend her Jasmin Open title and will on Friday play the unseeded Mai Hontama. The winner of this quarterfinal will then proceed to play either Clara Burel or Lucrezia Stefanini for a place in the final. Mai Hontama is making her Monastir debut. She has won her two rounds and defeated Nadia Podoroska by the loss of just three games in the last round. The win, her 44th of an impressive season, moved the Japanese number two up to 119th in the live ranking. Hontama, who has registered 31 of her victories on hard courts, has lost six of the eight quarterfinals she has contested this year.
Elise Mertens won the title here in her debut last season. She looks primed to defend her crown and has won her two rounds without dropping a set. The Belgian defeated Iryna Shymanovich by the loss of five games in the last round. This was her fourth victory in the last five outings and allowed her to move three places to 33rd in the live ranking. Mertens, who has contested just two quarterfinals all year, has compiled a 27-22 record. Twenty-one of her victories have come on hard courts, her favoured surface to play on.
