The qualifier James Duckworth will be out to prolong his Brisbane International stay when he battles unseeded Yannick Hanfmann next. Winning this second-round tie will see the victor set up a quarterfinal showdown with either Holger Rune or Alexander Shevchenko. James Duckworth has been in excellent form in what is his debut appearance in Brisbane. The Australian, who has been boosted by the support of the home crowd, has won his three matches without dropping a set. He defeated J.J Wolf in the first round by the loss of seven games. Duckworth is seeking his first win over Hanfmann in what is their third encounter. The 31-year-old former world number 46, finished last season ranked 116th in the ATP. He compiled a 51-28 record and it was the second time in his career that he had won at least 50 matches. Playing predominantly in the challenger circuit, Duckworth played in six finals and won two.

Yannick Hanfmann has won both meetings with Duckworth with the most recent coming this past October. This should have him confident of prolonging his stay here in what is his second appearance in Brisbane. Hanfmann, back here after a six-year hiatus, defeated Sebastian Korda in straight sets in the first round. The win ended a four-match losing run that closed out last season. Hanfmann had a strong 2023 campaign and recorded the most wins he has managed in six years. He compiled a 43-30 record and played a quarterfinal in at least seven tournaments including the Rome Masters. On hard courts, however, the German struggled and won just six of his 14 matches on the surface. Hanfmann is ranked 51st in the ATP.
