World number seven Holger Rune will take on 53rd-ranked Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of the ATP Basel Open on Tuesday. The winner of this match will move on to face Christopher O’Connell in the Round of 16. These two met last week in Stockholm, and Kecmanovic won the match in straight sets. The Serbian went on to reach the semi-final in that tournament before losing to qualifier Pavel Kotov. That was the fifth time this year he reached the final four of a tournament, but he is yet to claim his first ATP title. Kecmanovic is now 26-28 for the year and 11-13 on the hard surface. As a result, he has also seen his world ranking slip this season, down from inside the top 30 at the start of the year to outside the top 50 at present. Still, having gotten the best of this opponent last week, the Serbian will be confident of his chances in this one. 

Meanwhile, clay court specialist Holger Rune has been struggling to find top form since the grass swing back in July. Before losing to this opponent last week, the Dane also bowed out in the first round of the Shanghai Masters at the start of the month. There he was beaten by Brandon Nakashima in straight sets and won just two games in the match. He has now only gotten past the first round once in his last six tournaments since Wimbledon. With that, Rune’s record for the year now reads as 38-20 but just 10-10 on the hard surface. The Dane is in desperate need of a good run of results, but can he overcome Kecmanovic this week, or will the Serbian come out on top again?
