Eighth seed Gael Monfils faces unseeded Flavio Cobolli in the Sud de France Open first round. Monfils is up to 70th in the live rankings at the time of writing this preview on January 27. He is making his way back up the world rankings after time off court due to injury and was as low as 394th at one point in 2023. He showed a distinct improvement in form as last year progressed. That included a quarter final in Toronto and winning an ATP 250 tournament held in Stockholm last October. This year has seen him lose in round one of the ASB Classic in Auckland and get to the second round of the Australian Open where he lost to Tomas Martin Etcheverry. He has won this tournament on three previous occasions, most recently in 2020.

Flavio Cobolli is 76th in the live rankings and climbed 24 places due to his reaching the third round of the Australian Open. He had to qualify to get into the main draw and won three matches without losing a set. That took him into a first round match against 18th seeded Nicolas Jarry and he won that in five sets. A four set win over unseeded Pavel Kotov followed but his run came to an end in round three when losing in straight sets to 10th seed Alex de Minaur, winning only seven games. The 21-year-old won a hard court Challenger Tour event last year but lacks experience on the ATP Tour. We go for Monfils to get the win in this match.
