Two qualifiers meet in the first round of the Madrid Masters. Aleksandar Kovacevic takes on Hamad Medjedovic with the winner facing Jiri Lehecka (seeded 30th) in the second round. Kovacevic is 97th in the latest ranking list but qualifying for the main draw of this outdoor clay court tournament has taken him up to 89th. The American eased through qualifying with two straight sets wins and only 12 games being dropped. He's not had the best of clay court seasons so far this year. He lost in the first round in Bucharest last week and before that, the second round in the US Clay Court Championship. This is his first time in the Madrid Masters. He's only had one visit to Roland Garros and lost in the first round last year.

Hamad Medjedovic is playing only his fourth tournament of the year. He's up to 124th in the live rankings after making it into the main draw in Madrid. He also had a few problems in the qualifying rounds and lost the first set of his opening match against Hugo Gaston. He survived that and then had a straight sets win over Francesco Comesana for the loss of only five games. That meant he'd made it into the main draw of an ATP Tour event for the first time this year. Like his opponent, this is his first time in this tournament and he's never got past round one at Roland Garros. Last year did see him win three Challenger Tour clay court events. We tip him to win this match.
