Everything you need to know about Super Bowl LX
by Enzo Tregoat | by Cydias Aujard
The Super Bowl LX will see New England Patriots, champions of the AFC, face off against the Seattle Seahawks, winners of the NFC. It’s a rematch of Super Bowl XLIX, and, perhaps more remarkably, a meeting of two teams few expected to reach this stage when the season began.
Both franchises were widely viewed as long shots before Week 1, with neither side seriously tipped as a playoff contender. Yet here they are, defying expectations and rewriting their respective narratives.
Few stories capture that underdog theme better than Sam Darnold. Cast aside by Minnesota less than a year ago, Darnold has resurrected his career on the biggest possible stage. On the opposite sideline, Drake Maye, still in just his second season, has been guided to the Super Bowl by head coach Mike Vrabel. Meanwhile, Mike Macdonald has overseen a dramatic turnaround in Seattle, ending four years of mediocrity by building elite units on both sides of the ball.
Advantage Seattle
Seattle’s edge becomes clearer the deeper the matchup is examined. Despite modest preseason expectations, the Seahawks have performed like a true heavyweight throughout the year. New England have also reached a high level, but it’s difficult to ignore the role played by a relatively favorable schedule.
Quarterback form is another decisive factor. Maye enjoyed the stronger regular season overall, but his playoff performances have been uneven. Darnold, by contrast, entered the postseason with lingering doubts about his ability to deliver under pressure, doubts he has answered by throwing for nearly 500 yards without an interception in two playoff games.
Offensively, Seattle simply have more ways to hurt opponents. Even with Zach Charbonnet sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Seahawks boast superior weapons and a more reliable running game. New England’s receiving group, while functional, lacks the same level of explosiveness.
Defensively, both teams rank among the NFL’s elite. Seattle, however, holds a slight statistical advantage and has consistently imposed its will against stronger opposition.
For the Patriots to win, Maye will need to produce his very best performance of the season.
How Seattle Reached the Super Bowl
Seattle dominated the regular season, finishing 14–3 and securing the No. 1 seed in the NFC along with a first-round bye. Their defense, among the league’s best in EPA allowed, also led the NFL in fewest points conceded.
The postseason began emphatically. A kickoff return touchdown set the tone as the Seahawks dismantled the San Francisco 49ers 41–6 in the Divisional Round, a result that allowed Darnold to manage the game while working through an oblique issue.
In the NFC Championship Game, Seattle faced the Los Angeles Rams. Narrow favorites thanks largely to home-field advantage, the Seahawks delivered in a thrilling 31–27 victory. Darnold was near flawless, the passing game shone, and the defense once again met the elite standards established throughout the season.
How New England Reached the Super Bowl
New England, as their opponent Seattle, had a regular-season record of 14–3, winning their division but missing out on a bye. That meant an extra game in the Wild Card Round against the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Patriots advanced with a 16–3 win, though it was far from an offensive showcase. Maye struggled for rhythm, but the defense controlled the game against a depleted Chargers roster.
A Divisional Round clash with the Houston Texans followed. Once again, defense proved decisive. Capitalizing on mistakes from C.J. Stroud, New England built an early advantage and eventually pulled away for a 12-point win.
The AFC Championship took the Patriots to Denver, where conditions were brutal. With Bo Nix sidelined through injury, the Broncos turned to Jarrett Stidham. New England fell behind early but leaned on disciplined defense and smart play-calling from Vrabel to grind out a 10–7 victory in a snowstorm, sealing their place in Super Bowl LX.
