We welcome the return of the Premier League this weekend with Tottenham hosting Burnley for the opening round of fixtures in the 2025-26 season! After suffering their worst ever finish in the Premier League at 17th last year, Spurs were able to salvage their season by lifting the Europa League trophy. Spurs are unbeaten in their last four opening day fixtures, although have drawn the last two in a row. They ran out 3-1 winners the last time they faced a promoted side at home to start the season (vs Aston Villa in 2019-20).
Burnley won promotion from the Championship last season at the first time of asking with a second-place finish after equalling champions Leeds’ points total of 100. The goal this year is clear: avoid the drop. The visitors haven’t had much luck recently on opening day in the Premier League. In their last three seasons in the top flight, Burnley lost the first match of the campaign on all three occasions.

Tottenham - Burnley: Form Analysis
Spurs had a decent preseason, winning twice, drawing three and losing once which included a morale-boosting win over Arsenal. Their first competitive game of the season was on Wednesday when they took on Champions League winners PSG in the UEFA Super Cup.
After playing brilliantly for 84 minutes, it would all fall apart for Tottenham in the final moments of the match. Spurs saw their 2-0 lead vanish after conceding in the 85’ and the 90+4’ to draw 2-2 after 90 minutes.
From there, it was the Parisians that kept their nerve in the penalty shootout, winning 4-3 and beating out Tottenham for their first silverware of the new season.
Tottenham have an 8-1-1 record against Burnley in their last 10 matches across all competitions.
Burnley have a tough task ahead of them given their struggles against Tottenham in recent years. They will, however, have the rest advantage and will be hoping that the Super Cup defeat will have dented their opponents confidence ahead of this one.
Burnley reached the century mark in points last season in England’s second flight after posting 28 wins, 16 draws and only two defeats. However, they were just edged out to the title by Leeds, who finished with a superior goal differential of +65 to +53.
Burnley had a slow preseason which resulted in losing their last three outings, the most recent of which finished 1-0 to Lazio.

Tottenham & Burnley Squad Analysis
Tottenham finished as the seventh highest-scoring team in the division last season but were carved open on the defensive end, conceding a total of 65 goals (fifth most in the league). To help address this, they signed Joao Palhinha from Bayern on loan in an attempt to add some defensive steel to the midfield.
Also joining the team was Mohammed Kudus from West Ham in a deal worth £55 million. Kudus and Richarlison started as the striker duo against PSG, although Dominic Solanke is expected to return to the starting lineup after recently recovering from an ankle injury.
James Maddison suffered a heart-wrenching ACL injury in preseason.
The 28-year-old was a key figure for Tottenham last season, providing 12 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances. Maddison is expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the 2025-26 season. Tottenham will also be without Dejan Kulusevski who is expected to be out for a few weeks.
Burnley’s identity last season was built off of their lockdown defense. Manager Scott Parker guided his side to a record-high 30 clean sheets which included a stretch of over 1000 minutes without conceding.
Armando Broja, who made his way over to Lancashire from Chelsea for a reported price of £20 million this summer, is lacking match fitness but could be available for the opening match. Zeki Amdouni is a long term absence while Bashir Humphreys is still a few weeks away from a return.
