The second match in Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will see Asia's most successful nation, South Korea, open against the Czech Republic, who are back on the global stage after a 20-year absence. The 'Taegeuk Warriors' are ranked 25th, while the 'Representatives' are ranked 39th in the world ahead of this competition. Looking at the recent matches of these two teams, our match prediction is that both teams will score.
Mexico and South Africa are the other two teams in the group. The Koreans are making their 12th appearance in a FIFA World Cup, and their fourth-place finish in the 2002 edition remains the best performance by any Asian side. They dominated the Asian qualifiers and advanced through the second group stage, winning 11 and drawing five games.
Czechia were last seen on the global stage in 2006 and had to navigate through the playoffs to earn their ticket this time. They finished second behind Croatia in Group L before defeating Ireland and Denmark. Can they show the same resilience to frustrate their fancied Asian opponents in the first game? Korea Republic - Czechia: Form Analysis
After navigating easily through the qualifiers, Korea played ten international friends, winning six (D1, L3). Their losses have come against Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Austria – the last two in March this year.
There are concerns over the playing style of the Koreans, with coach Hong Myung-Bo favoring steady performances over flamboyance. That's visible in their latest friends, as the 'Taegeuk Warriors' scored fewer than two goals in four of their last five matches.
Five of Korea's last seven matches have seen under 2.5 goals.
Czechia are on a better form of results, at least on paper. After defeating Ireland and Denmark on penalties in the playoffs, they defeated Kosovo (2-1) and Guatemala (3-1) in the international friends leading to this tournament.
That puts them on a run of six consecutive wins, although South Korea will be a difficult opposition. The 71-year-old coach Miroslav Koubek took charge of the side in December 2025 but has shown an inclination to put the team above individuals, notably stripping West Ham United's Tomas Soucek of captaincy.

Korea Republic & Czechia Squad Analysis
South Korea usually lines up in a 3-4-3 formation, which in practice often resembles a back five with the wingbacks happy to sit back. They remain a tough team to break down, which explains the lesser number of goals in their games recently.
The final third will be manned by captain Son Heung-min, who, with 56 goals, is their second all-time highest goal scorer behind Cha Bum-kun (58). He will line up along with Lee Kang-In behind their sole striker Hwang Hee-chan.
Son has seven goals from the World Cup qualifiers for Korea.
Czechia line up in a 3-4-1-2 formation, but have usually depended on fast counterattacks for goals. They have struggled in the midfield, though, with Soucek and Vladimir Darida manning the central midfield. Playing ahead of them would be Pavel Sulc, who many expect to be their creative spark.
The goal-scoring duties will fall on Bayer Leverkusen's Patrick Schick and Slavia Prague's Tomas Chory. Schick is coming off a successful season for the Bundesliga side, netting 22 goals for Leverkusen in domestic and European competitions.

Our Korea Republic vs Czechia Prediction
South Korea start this competition as Asia's best team historically in the World Cups. They may not have a squad to challenge for the title, but they can certainly push for top honors in the group. Czechia will be an unknown quantity on the World Cup stage, playing their first global tournament since 2006. They have shown glimpses of scoring form in the qualifiers and should fancy their chances of sitting back and hurting on the counterattacks.
Going by the recent form of these two sides, our Korea Republic vs Czechia prediction is BTTS.
