Second seed Tallon Griekspoor begins his Romanian Open campaign with a second-round meeting with the unseeded Marton Fucsovics. The winner will then play Nuno Borges or Corentin Moutet in the quarterfinals. Marton Fucsovics is making his debut in this ATP 250 tournament. He defeated the qualifier Valentin Vacherot in straight sets in the first round. This was the ninth win in a topsy-turvy season that has seen him lose seven times. The Hungarian has however looked sharp on clay, a surface he favours, and has won three of four matches. Before arriving in Bucharest, he had made the last eight in Estoril. Fucsovics has won both times he has squared off with Griekspoor. This will be the third successive year they are going up against each other. Despite his first-round win, Fuscovics has dropped one place to 83rd in the live ranking.

Tallon Griekspoor is also having a rocky year and has won 11 of 19 fixtures. He has lost three times in his last five outings and is coming off a second-round exit in Monte Carlo. Though he is a strong clay court performer, the Rotterdam semifinalist has struggled on the surface going back to last season. He has lost six times in his last 10 outings on clay. Griekspoor has won 150 matches on clay in his career. He is currently up one place to 24th in the live ranking. The 27-year-old has not lost a tournament opener since the United Cup. This should add to boosting his confidence levels ahead of this match.
