A new season of the League Cup is on and one of the matches lined up in the opening round will be League Two side Mansfield Town taking on League One side Derby County. Mansfield, the hosts in this game, are coming from a 1-0 win over Tranmere Rovers, their opening win of the season. That result saw them rise from the 2-0 defeat to Salford City in their season opening game. They now have three clean sheets in the last four matches, and also three wins in four, having finished their preseason engagements on a high. In 10 matches across all competitions, Mansfield have lost just twice, winning six times, and also failing to score in two of the 10 games.
Derby County haven’t had the strongest of starts to life in the third tier. They did open their season with a win, beating Oxford United 1-0 but in their second game they suffered a 1-0 loss to Charlton Athletic. They head to this game on a very shaky run, and a poor finish in the preseason engagements. In the last five matches they have one win, and lost each of the other four. Derby County have one clean sheet in their last five matches and twice in that run, they conceded two or more goals. They haven’t scored more than a goal in those five matches, thus take a poor scoring run into this game. The visitors have also failed to score in two of their last five matches.
