Madison Keys, the fourth seed in Strasbourg, and Liudmilla Samsonova, the fifth seed, will meet in the semi-finals. Madison Keys is back amongst the final four in Strasbourg. The American last played a semi-final tie here in 2014 which is a year before her last appearance. Yet to drop a set in this year’s edition, Keys defeated Magda Linette by the loss of four games in the quarter-finals. She has now won 12 of 17 matches this year and is through to her second semi of the season. Keys, who has compiled a 9-3 record, was a semi-finalist in Madrid where Samsonova was amongst those to surrender to her. She won what was their first encounter on clay in straight sets and has now won three of four meetings with Samsonova. The 29-year-old has jumped two places to 14th in the live ranking.

Liudmila Samsonova defeated Keys the first time they met. This was three seasons ago at the German Open, a tournament she would go on to win as a qualifier. The Russian will hope the stars align for her again as they did in Berlin. Samsonova defeated second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia by the loss of just three games to advance to this round. It was her first straight sets victory in three months. Samsonova, who made the semi-finals in Abu Dhabi earlier in the year, has battled with inconsistency throughout the season. She has managed just eight wins so far which is three matches fewer of the total she has lost. Advancing to her second semi of the year has allowed her to strengthen her grip in the WTA top 20. The four-time tour champion is up two places to 17th in the live ranking. The winner here will then take on either Danielle Collins, Marketa Vondrousova or Anhelina Kalinina in the final.
