Leylah Fernandez, the 32nd seed, will begin her Madrid Open campaign with a second-round showdown against unseeded Anastasia Potapova. The winner will play Anna Karolina Schmiedlova or Ons Jabeur next. Leylah Fernandez is having a turbulent campaign. She has lost five times in her last six outings and is now on a losing 7-8 record. Currently, on a two-match skid, Fernandez was defeated in Charleston in the second round in her last outing. It was the fourth time this season that she has lost in the second round at an event. The world number 35 has however defeated Potapova both times they have previously squared off and this should build up her confidence levels. One of her wins was achieved on clay in Paris three seasons ago.

Anastasia Potapova is faring better than Fernandez and will be confident of securing her first win in this fixture. She has compiled a 12-8 record and has won two of three matches on clay this year. One of those wins was a straight-set victory over Diana Shnaider in the first round. Potapova is defending the 65 points won last year as she made it to the third round. This was her best-ever result in this WTA 1000 event in two appearances. Potapova has produced three quarter-final finishes this season with the highlight being in Indian Wells. Despite winning her first-round tie, the Russian number seven has dropped to 41st in the live ranking.
