Leeds vs Leicester Prediction & Betting Tips - Championship

by Ian John | in Championship Prediction

Leeds United face Leicester City in a huge Championship clash on Friday night as second hosts first in the table. Since losing to West Brom at the end of December, Leeds have won all their last eight in the Championship to move second in the table above Ipswich and Southampton but still nine points behind leaders Leicester City. The Foxes have been front-runners for a considerable while now and they know a win here would be huge in them securing not just promotion back to the Premier League, but the Championship title too. However, an unexpected defeat at home to Middlesbrough at the weekend sees them come into this game on the back of a rare defeat setting up Friday's game very nicely indeed.

Leeds - Leicester: Form Analysis

Leeds United come into this game in outstanding form. The Yorkshire club have won all eight of their League games since the turn of the year and they have progressed into the fifth round of the FA Cup where they will face old rivals Chelsea away. However, promotion will be the first aim for United fans this season and they are on course to do that. They have an unbeaten record at Elland Road this season and can already point to a 1-0 away win over the Foxes back in November. Daniel Farke's team are flying at the moment and a win on Friday night would put them just six points behind their opponents with a dozen games of the season left for the two teams.

The problem for Leeds is that Leicester City will also know that fact and they will also know that a win here would not just dent Leeds promotion hopes, but it would give theirs a huge boost, putting the Foxes 12 points clear of their opponents. That would be a huge deficit to claw back over the remaining 12 games of the season. Enzo Maresca's team are the top scorers in the division with an impressive 69 goals in 33 games, with just 26 conceded. They have three players on ten goals this season (Dewsbury-Hall, Mavdidi and Vardy) and they will also have Kelechi Iheanacho back from African Cup of Nations duty for this game. The Foxes saw a long unbeaten run come to an end at the weekend, when losing 2-1 at home to Middlesbrough so they will be looking to bounce back strongly here.

Leeds & Leicester Squad Analysis

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke will be without a couple of key men for the top of the table clash with Leicester on Friday night. Stuart Dallas, Karl Darlow and Sam Byram are all ruled out of the game while Pascal Struijk and Patrick Bamford are both likely to miss out with relatively minor injuries, and both should make a return to first team action in the near future. Joel Piroe will likely continue in attack with impressive young winger duo Crysencio Summerville and Wilfred Gnonto providing the ammunition down both flanks allowing Georginio Rutter to play a slightly deeper lying role behind Piroe. Young midfielder Archie Gray has been outstanding this season with the 17-year-old drawing plenty of attention from the top teams in the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca should have a relatively injury-free squad to select from for the game with Leeds. Marc Albrighton made his return from injury in the weekend defeat at home to Middlesbrough and Kelechi Iheanacho has returned from representing Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations and will be available for selection for the Leeds game. Jannik Vestergaard played against Middlesbrough too which means that it is only Wilfred Ndidi who remains out with a leg injury sustained in December and he is not likely to be back until mid April. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been one of the Foxes top men this season, scoring 10 goals from midfield and also creating 12 others. He is a vital cog in the Foxes midfield alongside Harry Winks and left winger Stephy Mavdidi.

Leeds - Leicester Key Points

  1. Leeds are unbeaten in their last 11 games in all competitions. They have also not been beaten at Elland Road this season, winning 12 and drawing 4 of their 16 home games so far.
  2. Leicester have comfortably the best away record in the Championship winning 12, drawing 2 and losing just 2 of their 16 away games, taking 38 points from them, six more than the two teams with the next best away record.
  3. The Foxes have lost just three games at home, but one of those was a 1-0 defeat to Leeds back in November, when Georginio Rutter's goal gave the Whites a deserved win.
  4. Both teams have scored in 56% of Leeds United's home games this season, while 69% of Leicester City away games have seen both teams score. However, overall this season, Leeds United have kept a clean sheet in 45% of their games home and away.
  5. 58% of Leicester Games and 55% of Leeds games home and away this season have seen over 2.5 goals scored.
  6. These two teams have the best defensive record in the Championship in terms of goals conceded with both seeing just 26 goals against them this season. That is five better than the next best team in the division (WBA on 31).

Our Leeds vs Leicester Prediction

Leeds v Leicester could well be the pivotal game in the title race in the Championship. If Leicester win, then they look certain to be Champions and Leeds will be back in the hunt for the second outright promotion spot, trying to avoid the playoffs. A Leeds win sees them move six behind Leicester, inflicting a second successive defeat on the Foxes and will also see them pull away from Southampton and Ipswich. The problem with that is that both teams are so well-matched it is hard to separate them. I do think we will see goals in this one, but our prediction for Leeds v Leicester City is for this game to finish as a draw.

Leeds vs Leicester - Other Interesting Predictions

Draw And Both Teams to Score

We've already said that we expect a draw between these Leeds and Leicester, but I also expect them to be goals given the fact these are the two highest scoring teams in the division, albeit with the best defence. I certainly feel a 1-1 or even a 2-2 draw is a very good bet here so backing a draw and both teams to score makes a solid second bet on the game.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Leicester City) to score at any time

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall may sound like a stately home, but his performances this season have been royally good too. With 12 assists and 10 goals in the league, he is top (or joint top) of both those charts for his team. At odds of 5.5, he is a great choice to score a goal for Leicester against the hosts on Friday.
