The last quarter-final matchup in the World Baseball Classic will see Japan taking on Venezuela. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will take on Ranger Suarez on the bump in this one, so let’s take a look over the path so far and make a prediction.
Japan came through Pool C on their own patch without losing a game, beating Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Australia and the Czech Republic. They have the last game of the four having traveled over from Japan to Miami for this contest.
In five editions of the World Baseball Classic, Japan have won the tournament three times and been semi-finalists the other two times. That is a record that they are not going to want to lose without an almighty fight.
Venezuela were runner-up in Pool D behind the Dominican Republic. It was that team that inflicted their only defeat of the tournament to this point on them, losing 7-5 in the final game with both coming in at 3-0.
They picked up wins over the Netherlands, Israel and Nicaragua in the group, though they were not one of the higher scoring teams, averaging 6.5 runs per game but that was more than enough.
