Egypt and Iran will face off in one of the key matches in the third round at the 2026 World Cup. The two nations clash in Group G, a tight pool that sees the leaders separated from the bottom side by three points. Egypt sit atop the group on four points, followed by Iran on two.
A goal difference of +2 further favors Egypt as they eye a first-ever progression to the knockouts at a World Cup. Iran will also have the same aspiration, having always ended their campaigns in the group stage. A win for either side will be a guarantee to play in the round of 32.
For Egypt, a draw will be enough, but the same may leave Iran hoping for a slot among the best eight third-place finishers. These two nations’ runs to this end have been defined by defensive solidity. At least four clean sheets have been posted in the teams’ respective last seven matches. It is with that in mind that our prediction backs one or both sides not to score.

Egypt - Iran: Form Analysis

Egypt had to overcome a first half scare in their last outing, recovering from a poor opening 45 minutes to beat New Zealand. A Mohamed Salah-inspired second half saw Egypt come from a goal down to beat the All Whites 3-1. That was Egypt’s first ever win at the World Cup, and should they get a second, or at least a draw, it will come wrapped with even more goodies.
The Pharaohs have never progressed past the group stage at the world championships but that will be history if they can hold on for at least a draw. Four points from their opening two matches might as well be enough, but the surest route remains avoiding defeat here.
Iran and Egypt face off for a third time, each having won once previously.
Iran pulled off a resilient show in matchday two action to hold off a star-studded Belgium. The Asian side forced a 0-0 draw against a nation ranked ninth in the world. By the spirit of that performance, and being better ranked than Egypt, Iran will be confident of taking the game to the Pharaohs.
The Iranians even had a goal ruled out as they stood up to the Belgian challenge. Off the pitch, Iran’s time in the USA is marked with a volatile backdrop, but so far they will be happy with their results. They come here targeting a sixth unbeaten outing, having won three of the last five.

Egypt & Iran Squad Analysis
Mohamed Salah remains Egypt’s key man at 34. He may well be playing his last World Cup, and he is giving his all for the Pharaohs. In the opening two matches, the forward has had three goal contributions. After his assist in the draw with Belgium, Salah had a goal and another assist against New Zealand.
He will once again be the man relied upon to produce the spark in attack for the African giants. Mostafa Ziko has also been a key man in the Egyptians’ attack, with four goal involvements in the last four matches. Meanwhile, Egypt could be without two players for this game. Hamdy Fathi had to be withdrawn in the first half against New Zealand. He would later be joined on the sidelines by Abdel Hossam, who had only been introduced in the 85th minute.
For club and country, Salah has four goal contributions in the last four games.
Iran may lack many standout players, but as a team, they are one of the most disciplined. They showed glimpses of that by twice coming from down to draw New Zealand and by solidly defending against Belgium.
Key to this has also been their experience, with Amir Ghalenoei naming a starting team with the average age of 32 years in the last game. Mehdi Taremi, 33, of Olympiacos was a highlight in that lineup and was unlucky to see a goal disallowed by VAR for offside. Ramin Rezaeian will hope to rediscover his matchday one touch when he had a goal and an assist.

Our Egypt vs Iran Prediction
Egypt and Iran face off for the third time in their history, but this will mark their first competitive meeting. The last time they clashed was in 2000, and here they both have a lot to play for. While a win will be crucial for either nation, we don’t expect to see an all-out attacking game.
Caution will be on the menu for these sides as they seek to protect the gains so far. That aspect, plus their recent numbers in defence have us convinced that this will not be a high-scoring fixture. Our prediction for Egypt v Iran is: BTTS-No.
Egypt vs Iran Alternative Predictions
Draw
Egypt will be looking to secure their slot at the top of this group, which means they must avoid defeat. With just one loss in their last five outings, that ambition seems achievable.
Winning here might be a tall order, though, as Iran have also been good lately. The Asian nation is undefeated in five but drew the last two. With the two sides’ recent form, our second prediction is for a draw.
