The margin for error has shrunk drastically for Senegal and Iraq as they take in matchday two defeats at the 2026 World Cup. The two nations will face off in the third round, starting at the bottom of Group I without a point. A better goal difference has Senegal sitting ahead of Iraq.
The trajectory of both nations’ knockout rounds is well defined, and neither side can afford not to win here. The only opportunity available for Senegal and Iraq is to qualify among the best third-place finishers. Senegal will feel like the favorites here, facing the lowest-ranked nation in the group.
However, internal disputes seem to have rocked the African giants’ camp, and Iraq will want to take advantage. This is a battle of the big cats; the Lions of Teranga against the Lions of Mesopotamia. Both have struggled to keep clean sheets lately. Our prediction is for both teams scoring, but whichever stays disciplined and tactical will gain the spoils here. Below, we preview the match.

Senegal - Iraq: Form Analysis

It has been a frustrating run for Senegal so far. The African giants went really close in their two matches but still ended up losers. At 2-1 down against France, they seemed to be in line for an equalizer but were instead crushed by a Kylian Mbappé-inspired performance. It ended 3-1. An even more spirited effort against Norway also fell short as they lost 3-2.
Undeniably, the Lions of Teranga have the fight in them, but that’s not all that matters. They are now winless in four matches, having earlier gone unbeaten in 10 outings on the pitch, winning nine. What has really deteriorated, though, is Senegal’s defence. In three of their last four matches, they conceded three goals.
17 goals were scored in these two nations’ opening two Group I matches.
Iraq, just as Senegal, have all to play for here. Unlike their more decorated African opponents, the Lions of Mesopotamia have never advanced to the knockouts. This is their opportunity to try and head there, targeting one of the eight slots for the high-ranking third-place teams.
Iraq’s return for their second World Cup appearance hasn’t been as fruitful as expected. They had a glimmer of hope on matchday one after equalizing against Norway, but they were in the end thumped 4-1. The second match was even more chastening as they went down 3-0 against a ruthless France.

Senegal & Iraq Squad Analysis
The biggest blow to Senegal apart from their defeat to Norway was the injury to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The Saudi Arabia-based shot stopper picked up a thigh injury after conceding three times in the game. Following lengthy attention from the team medics, the Senegal bench opted to send in Mory Diaw.
It isn’t clear how long Mendy will be sidelined, but with the magnitude of this clash, they will not be very open to taking the risk. The African giants will need all hands on deck, and in attack, Ismaila Sarr will be looking to build on his brace against Norway.
Senegal and Iraq have no players suspended for this encounter.
Iraq could be without two players in this crucial match. Their injury woes deepened in the defeat to France when Hussein Ayman was withdrawn early in the opening half. The scorer of two of Iraq’s last four goals, Ayman picked up a thigh injury, and his return remains in doubt.
Meanwhile, Ali Jasim’s fitness levels remain unknown after he sustained a neck injury in the opening round of matches. The Al Najma winger was on the bench the entire time as Iraq battled France. Should he fail to make it back to full fitness, it is his versatility that the team will miss most.

Our Senegal vs Iraq Prediction
After their opening defeats, no other result will work for these teams other than a win. That already shows this will be a hard-fought game. This is the kind of encounter in which the competing teams pull all stops for a win, so we expect an end-to-end attacking game.
Both sides have had trouble keeping clean sheets, a trend that we may see here too. As they’ve also been scoring with some consistency, backing that to continue could be a good bet. Our prediction for Senegal v Iraq is BTTS.

This match marks the first ever meeting between these two nations. Senegal are the higher ranked and have been backed to break their winless run here. After a solid but unlucky showing against Norway, normalcy is expected back here. Our second prediction is for the African nation to win.
