World Baseball Classic Groups
The World Baseball Classic gets underway with a pool stage involving all 20 qualified teams. The field is split into four pools of five, with the three host nations, Japan, Puerto Rico and the United States, placed first, before the remaining allocation is shaped by a mix of world rankings, competitive balance and anticipated fan interest.

How Does World Baseball Classic Work?
You can view the World Baseball Classic as a tournament with two distinct phases. First comes the group stage, where all 20 nations take part, including several underdogs such as Great Britain, Czech Republic and Nicaragua. From there, eight teams advance to the knockouts: the top two finishers in each group, with the quarter-finals marking the start of the elimination rounds.
In the group stage, each nation plays the other four teams in its group once. Every group is based at a single venue: group A is staged at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, group B at Daikin Park, group C at the Tokyo Dome, and group D at LoanDepot Park.
From the quarter-finals onwards, including the semi-finals and the final, each tie is a single, winner-takes-all game.
