The Gillette Stadium comes to life on Friday as Norway and France collide in the 2026 World Cup Group I final round of matches. The two teams are through to the next round of the competition on six points each, but will be out to claim the top spot. With a significant 28-place advantage over Norway in world rankings and an impressive nine-match unbeaten run across competitive fixtures, our prediction here supports a French victory.

Norway announced their return to football's biggest stage in style, winning all eight of their 2026 UEFA qualifiers to end their almost three decades wait for an appearance at the World Cup. They could hardly have hoped for a better start to the tournament after a 28-year-absence, sweeping their opening two matches to secure their place in the next round.

However, France will offer a true test of the Vikings' recent resurgence. Les Bleus, who finished as runners-up at the last World Cup, have also swept their opening two fixtures and are top of the group with a +1 goal difference. This will be their first competitive meeting with Norway since their 1–1 draw in the 1989 qualifiers. Stay tuned as we analyze further.

Norway - France: Form Analysis

Norway France Predictions - World Cup 2026

Norway eased past 57th-ranked Iraq 4–1 in their 2026 World Cup opener, thanks to Erling Haaland's brace. The Manchester City forward also nailed home another brace as the Red, White and Blue edged past AFCON title holders and World No. 15 Senegal 3–2 in their second match.

However, Ståle Solbakken's side found results difficult to come by against higher-ranked teams prior to the World Cup. They fell 2–1 to eighth-ranked Netherlands and settled for stalemates against 19th-ranked Switzerland and World No.5 Morocco.

France are ranked second by bookmakers to win the 2026 World Cup in the outright winner market, trailing only Spain

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France kicked off their 2026 World Cup campaign with a 3–1 victory over Senegal. The prolific forward also bagged a brace as team roast Iraq 3–0 in their second fixture on Monday.

The Blues have now gone nine competitive matches without tasting defeat (W8, D1) since June 2025. Historically, they have been tough opponents for Norway, avoiding defeat in six of the last seven meetings between the two sides. The two-time World Cup champions, who have impressed at the last two World Cups, have a significant advantage here over a Norway side that is just making a return to the tournament since 1998.

Norway & France Squad Analysis

Norway stuck to their winning starting XI against Senegal, although with a minor tweak that saw Antonio Nusa joined Erling Haaland and Alexander Sorloth in a three-man attack. Ståle Solbakken is likely to field the same lineup on Friday, except with a tweak to the right-back that could see Torino's Marcus Pedersen replace Julian Ryerson, who limped off the Senegal match with a thigh injury.

France will have to contain Haaland who remains the most potent threat in the Norwegians' attack with four goals so far in the tournament. Premier League winner Martin Odegaard has also been instrumental to the team's successes with two assists in the tournament and will return to lead the midfield battle.

Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise have produced a terrific attacking partnership at the 2026 World Cup, combining for a tournament-best seven goal contributions

Didier Deschamps made three changes to France's starting eleven against Iraq, with Lucas Digne replacing Hernandez at left back, Manu Kone stepping in for Aurelien Tchouameni in defensive midfield, and Bradley Barcola for Desire Doue on left wing. He is expected to parade his strongest lineup with the group's top spot at stake on Friday.

William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano are likely to return at center-back with Adrien Rabiot in defensive midfield. Ballon d'Or holder Ousmane Dembele, alongside playmaker Michael Olise, will line up behind four-goal Kylian Mbappe in the attack.

Our Norway vs France Prediction

While we expect a thrilling contest as the two sides wage battle for Group I's top spot, France are well-positioned to ace the clash. Apart from their impressive unbeaten run in the past 12 months, the Didier Deschamps-led team boasts greater World Cup experience and is leagues above a Norwegian side returning to the tournament after a lengthy absence.

Additionally, Norway have struggled against higher-ranked teams recently and have largely been unsuccessful in previous meetings against France. Our Norway vs France prediction:  France wins.
