Group A leaders Bendel Insurance will on Saturday travel to face off with Gombe United in Round 16 of the Nigerian Professional League. With three matches left to play, Bendel are the only team remaining yet to lose a match across both groups in the topflight this season and come to this match with a six-point advantage at the top of the table while Gombe are seventh with 18 points. Gombe look resigned to finishing in mid-table though they still can make the top three for the championship playoffs as they are just seven points away. They will however have to win their remaining three matches and hope for a miracle from the teams above them. Gombe come to this match after losing their fifth match of the season when they were humbled 3-0 away to Shooting Stars. Their heaviest defeat of the campaign extended their run without a win to two matches after they had drawn 1-1 with relegation-threatened Nasarawa United before that. Gombe held Bendel to a 0-0 draw in the first-ever match between them in the top flight and are so far the only team to have kept the league leaders from scoring.

Bendel Insurance come to this match after securing their eighth win of the season last time out when they defeated bottom club El Kanemi Warriors 2-1. This victory ended a run of five consecutive draws and the league leaders will want to build on this in anticipation of the playoffs. The Benin City-based club can seal their place in the championship rounds if they secure a win on Saturday and other results this weekend go in their favour. Bendel are only in their second season in the NPL and are returning following their relegation at the end of the 2019 season. They are the only team yet to have suffered a loss in the two groups and also the team to have amassed the most points with 31. They have been excellent on both ends of the pitch and especially in defence where they have conceded just nine goals and kept seven clean sheets.
