Novak Djokovic is attempting to win Wimbledon for the eighth time. Seeded second this year, he takes on qualifier Vit Kopriva in the first round. The second round opponent for the winner will be either wild card Jacob Fearnley or qualifier Alejandro Moro Canas.
Djokovic hasn’t won a title this year or even reached a final. He hasn’t played a tournament since withdrawing from Roland Garros. His participation at Wimbledon had been in doubt but he’s been practising without pain so here he is.
The draw has been kind to Djokovic and if he can get a couple of matches under his belt without injury problems, he will get much stronger as the tournament progresses.
Djokovic is second in the live rankings but can't reclaim top spot even if winning this tournament. He's only 13th in the Live ATP Race which reflects the disappointing year he's had.
World number 123 Vit Kopriva had to come through the qualifying rounds to get into this main draw. Each of his three qualifying matches saw him lose a set and he had to come from behind in two of them.
He was seeded 16th in the qualifiers and beat the 20th-seed Richard Gasquet in his final match. The first set was lost but only nine games were lost in the next three. That win took him into the main round of a Grand Slam for only the second time.
The other was this year’s Australian Open where he lost in five sets to Sebastian Korda. Kopriva hasn’t reached a quarter-final on either the Challenger or ATP Tour this year. He prefers clay and this is his first grass court tournament of the year.
