Uganda are back at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) stage and will begin their 2025 campaign in Morocco on Tuesday against Tunisia. The two nations have been pooled in a tough Group C that also has Nigeria and Tanzania. Read on to find our prediction of this match at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah Olympique Annex in Rabat.

This is the first time in 47 years that these two countries are facing off in a competitive setting. The Carthage Eagles have never lost to the Cranes, posting wins in all their six previous meetings, posting a 16-1 aggregate win. Their most recent matchup was a friendly played in the lead-up to the 2017 Cup of Nations.

Tunisia, making their 22nd AFCON appearance, are heavily favored by bookmakers to not only win this opener but also make it out of their group. Meanwhile, the 1978 finalists, Uganda, are on their eighth appearance at AFCON, having missed the last two editions.

Tunisia - Uganda: Form Analysis

Tunisia were poor in the last edition of AFCON. Coached then by Jalel Kadri, the North Africans were dumped out at the group stage, finishing bottom of their group without a win. They return to Africa’s biggest football showpiece looking to get over that poor campaign and possibly win another title.

Tunisia were crowned African champions on home soil 21 years ago and have never made the final since. Coached by Sami Trabelsi, the Eagles qualified for this year’s tournament after finishing second in their qualifying group.

They won three of six fixtures to end with 10 points, two behind group winners Comoros. Tunisia defeated Botswana 2-1 in their only build-up game before arriving in Morocco.

Uganda are making their eighth AFCON appearance, Tunisia their 22nd.

Uganda return to the AFCON after missing the last two editions. The East Africans were last at this stage in 2019, where they produced their best run in recent editions. Finalists in Ghana in 1978, the Cranes made it to the second round in Egypt six years ago.

Then, under Frenchman Sebastien Desabre, Uganda navigated through a tricky group that also had hosts Egypt and rising DR Congo. They lost just one of three games and will be looking for a similar run to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Paul Put’s men, who finished behind South Africa in their qualifying group, had mixed results in preparing for the tournament. Uganda played two friendlies in the last international window and won 2-1 against Chad before a 4-0 thumping by Morocco.

Tunisia & Uganda Squad Analysis

Most of the players called up by Tunisia play their professional football in Europe. Hannibal Mejbri of Burnley headlines the squad, together with Ellyes Skhiri of Eintracht Frankfurt and Montassar Talbi of Lorient.

Trabelsi has named a squad blending experience and youth. Yassine Meriah, Ali Maaloul, and Ferjani Sassi could all reach a century of appearances for their nation in Morocco.

Naim Sliti and Seifeddine Jaziri have scored a combined 25 goals for Tunisia and are the leading top scorers in the current squad.

Uganda called up veteran goalkeeper Dennis Onyango, 40, after four years out.

Uganda’s 28-man squad is filled with players plying their trade across the world. A majority, 16 to be exact, play in Africa, with five of those playing for Ugandan giants Vipers and KCCA.

Veteran keeper Dennis Onyango, who was present in Uganda’s last AFCON appearance six years ago, is the most capped player in the team with 82 appearances.

Midfielder Allan Okello has netted six goals for Uganda, and so too has Rogers Mato. The two are Uganda’s leading scorers in the current generation.

Our Tunisia vs Uganda Prediction

Our prediction for Tunisia v Uganda is that Tunisia wins. Tunisia have never lost against Uganda and have won each of the two nations’ three encounters. They also arrive for this latest meeting in better form, having won their last two games.

Uganda, on the other hand, haven’t played in over a month, having lost two of their latest three fixtures. What also has us convinced of a Tunisia victory is the off-field wrangles that have seen Uganda fail to have proper preparations. Latest reports have revealed that the Cranes haven’t held training in recent days.
