Both Schalke and Hamburg will be targeting promotion back to the Bundesliga at the end of the season, and as they open their Bundesliga 2 campaign, they will be seeking winning starts. The two sides are coming from disappointing endings to last season, Schalke relegated from the Bundesliga and Hamburg missing promotion after a poor run in the final matches. As they start life in the second tier, Schalke, seven-time Bundesliga champions, had a great run in preseason, scoring 25 goals in five matches, keeping four clean sheets and conceding just two goals. They won three of the five preseason matches, and failed to score in two. Against Hamburg the test will be bigger but they will be eying a second straight win over their visitors, having recorded a 4-0 win in a friendly in January 2020.

In competitive action, each of these two sides has two wins in the last five but Schalke have scored in all while Hamburg failed in one. Four of their last six meetings have produced over 2.5 goals. Hamburg are also coming from a great run in preseason, unbeaten in the four matches played, and drawing from their finish last season, they have no loss in the last five matches. In four of these five matches, they have registered wins and have four clean sheets. Hamburg have lost just once in the last nine matches. Though some of their recent matches haven’t seen more than a goal, four of the last seven have yielded over 2.5 goals and they have scored in each of their last 10 matches.
