Newcastle United fans aren't used to long runs in the FA Cup and haven't got past the fourth round since 2006. This season's campaign got off to a shaky start when they were held to a 1-1 draw away at League One Rochdale. Now comes the replay and with home advantage, United will be hoping to get through to the next round where they would face League One side Oxford United at home. Newcastle have had an up and down season and after climbing into the top ten of the Premier League, slipped again with three straight league defeats. Their last two games have both ended in 1-1 draws, first the cup tie and then a draw at Wolves on Saturday. leaving them 13th in the Premier League. United's home form is good though and over 90 minutes had been unbeaten in nine games before defeats by Everton and Leicester City.

Rochdale are 18th in League One and six points above the relegation zone. Last time they had a good cup run in 2018 they were in even deeper trouble but survived. On that occasion, they held Spurs to a home draw but lost the away replay 6-1. Rochdale are playing their sixth FA Cup tie of the season having had to go to replays against non-league sides Wrexham and Boston United. The League One side have won their last two fixtures but have lost two of their last three away games. Newcastle won't play a full-strength side of course but should still have enough to win this game and lead at both half and full time.
