The long wait is coming to an end; the 2026 World Cup is here! It is exactly 16 years since Mexico and South Africa faced off in the opening World Cup game. Like back then in 2010, this will be the first fixture of the 2026 tournament, as Mexico plays host. In 2010, they played out a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg, but in our prediction this time, we don’t fancy a share of spoils.
Mexico are favored, coming off a run of three straight wins and solid form, against a Bafana Bafana side winless in five straight matches. For South Africa, who rank 45 places below Mexico, this will be a massive test.
Their latest two wins were against nations ranked below 80th – Angola in 89th and Zimbabwe,130th. Here they face a hungry Mexico, a nation that holds the record for playing most World Cup games (60) without winning the title.

Mexico - South Africa: Form Analysis
Mexico may be playing at home, but there aren’t huge expectations that they will lift the world title. However, in their current form, it would be an underperformance if they failed to top Group A. Apart from South Africa, this pool also has the Czech Republic and South Korea.
Mexico are coming off three straight wins in their warmup matches ahead of the tournament. They’ve been growing from strength to strength and are fresh from a 5-1 win against Serbia. That was a perfect dose of confidence for home fans, with El Tri now unbeaten in eight matches, winning six. Six clean sheets in eight matches and scoring 15 times further back the co-hosts as favorites.
Mexico are unbeaten in seven World Cup openers since 1994.
South Africa haven’t won a lot lately, and facing a hostile crowd at Estadio Banorte is akin to baptism by fire. Bafana Bafana will be expecting that, as they make their first World Cup appearance since hosting the 2010 showpiece. This will only be the fourth time they participate in this global event.
The former African champions come into this encounter winless in five matches, two of them having ended in defeat. They drew with Nicaragua (0-0) and Jamaica (1-1) in their pre-tournament warmup matches. In their latest two meetings with Mexico, South Africa avoided defeat (1D, 1W) and they will be hoping to keep this run going.

Mexico & South Africa Squad Analysis
Mexico have been rock solid in defence and a key to that has been Genoa defender Johan Vasquez. The 27-year-old has been a performer on both ends of the pitch for club and country and brings into this game top form. In his last six matches, his teams managed three clean sheets. In attack he’s also been key, scoring in his last three outings for club and country.
Veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa will be a major attraction here as he comes into his sixth World Cup. It isn’t expected that he will start here, though, having played in just one of the three warmup matches. Guadalajara Chivas keeper Raul Rangel could be handed the start, having featured fulltime in their last friendly game.
40-year-old Ochoa is in line to become the fifth oldest player at a World Cup.
Among the changes South Africa will be hoping to see in this game is an improvement in attack. They’ve only scored more than a goal once in the last seven matches. In that regard, coach Hugo Broos will be praying that Orlando Pirates forward Oswin Apollis returns to his form in the qualifiers.
The 24-year-old was a cog in their attack, with six goal involvements back then. He scored twice and laid on four assists and was also on the mark in their final friendly match as South Africa drew 1-1 with Jamaica.

Our Mexico vs South Africa Prediction
Mexico were rampant in their last outing before the World Cup starts, scoring five times. It was only the second time in 10 matches that they managed more than two goals in one game. An area they’ve heavily invested in is the defence, as they come here having only conceded twice in eight games.
Seven of their last 10 outings failed to achieve more than two goals. We expect the same here, as South Africa have also been involved in low-scoring outcomes. The African nation will most likely line up defensively, making this potentially a game with few goals. Our prediction for Mexico v South Africa is for less than 2.5 goals.
Mexico vs South Africa Alternative Predictions
Mexico wins
In terms of recent form, Mexico will have the edge here, as they come unbeaten in eight outings, having managed six wins. In this shape they are very likely to upstage their two-game winless run against South Africa.
Playing at home adds to their advantage, as they will benefit from a biassed support as well. Our second prediction, therefore, is for Mexico to win.
