Preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup continue this week, and on Sunday, Mexico will be taking on Australia at the Rose Bowl in California. El Tri have only conceded one goal in 2026, and our prediction is that the Socceroos may struggle to create many clear chances in this match.
It’s going to be a big summer for Mexico, as they are set to co-host the World Cup and many are expecting them to go deep in the competition. They are ranked 15th according to FIFA ahead of the global spectacle and have been drawn into Group A with South Africa, South Korea and Czechia.
Australia will also be looking forward to this year’s World Cup, having cracked a favourable draw in Group D, alongside the USA, Paraguay and Turkiye. The Socceroos are assembling for their first match since the FIFA Series in March, and this will give Tony Popovic a valuable chance to test out some of his fringe players. Let’s get into the key stats.

Mexico - Australia: Form Analysis
Mexico kicked off their 2026 World Cup preparations last weekend on a positive note, notching up an impressive 2-0 home victory against Ghana, who failed to register a single shot on target.
El Tricolour are now unbeaten in all six of their matches in 2026 (W4 D2) and kept clean sheets in five of those games, with the only exception being a 1-1 draw against Belgium on April 1.
However, the Mexicans have not fared too well north of the border in recent years. They are winless in their last five matches on American soil, which included losses in two of their last three games here.
Mexico are winless in their last three matches against Australia in all competitions (D1 L2)!
Meanwhile, Australia are preparing to feature in their sixth consecutive World Cup campaign and will be hoping to get beyond the Round of 16 in the competition for the first time ever this year.
The Socceroos lost their final three games in 2025 and failed to score in two of those matches, but they have yet to taste defeat this year, having beaten Cameroon and Curacao back in March.
The Aussies have also struggled to produce positive results in the USA, with each of their last three ending in defeat, while the last time they won a match here was prior to the turn of the century.

Mexico & Australia Squad Analysis
Brian Gutierrez took just over a minute to open the scoring for Javier Aguirre’s side against Ghana last week, and he should start in midfield this weekend alongside Erik Lira.
Raul Jimenez missed the match against the Black Stars through illness and could be rested for this one as well, which should see either Armando Gonzalez or Guillermo Martinez Ayala start in the number nine role.
Both Marcel Ruiz (ACL) and Luis Malagon (Achilles) have been ruled out of this year’s World Cup due to serious injuries, while Santiago Gimenez is listed as a doubt owing to a knock.
Gutierrez has scored two goals in his last four starts for Mexico!
As for Australia, Feyenoord defender Jordan Bos had an excellent cameo in the last match, coming off the bench to score and provide an assist in his side’s 5-1 drubbing of Curacao in March.
Watford forward Nestory Irankunda bagged a brace off the bench in that match as well. The 20-year-old has now recorded five goals and an assist in just 13 appearances for the Socceroos.
Nicholas D’Agostino and Middlesbrough’s Riley McGree have been ruled out of the World Cup through injury, while Hayden Matthews and Patrick Yazbek are listed as doubts for this weekend.

Our Mexico vs Australia Prediction
Mexico are heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the dark horses. They have been in impressive form this year, currently unbeaten in six games, while having kept clean sheets in all but one of those matches.
Australia won both their games in March, but those wins were against significantly lower-ranked opponents than El Tri. With both camps expected to try out several players in this match, we feel that chances will be at a premium. Our Mexico vs Australia prediction is less than 2.5 goals.
