Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini goes up against the unseeded Magdalena Frech in the second round of the Australian Open. Their third career meeting will also be their first match at a major. Read on for our prediction. 

Magdalena Frech breezed past Melbourne debutant Veronika Erjavec in the first round, losing just two games in their first-ever meeting. She has now avoided a first-round exit at this major for a third season running. 

The Pole, who recorded a first fourth-round finish here in 2024, was eliminated in the third round last year. Frech, the world number 57, has won three of four matches to start the season. 

Jasmine Paolini has won back-to-back matches after starting the season with a loss at the United Cup. The world number eight also had a dominant start to the week as she lost just three games to the qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich. 

After starting her Australian Open record with four consecutive first-round exits, Paolini has now won her opener for a third time. Last year, she exited the event after three rounds, falling just one win short of equaling a career-high finish. 

The 30-year-old defeated Frech in Cleveland in their most recent meeting to tie this series at 1-1.
