Lorenzo Sonego caused an upset in round one at Roland Garros with a victory over 17th seed Ugo Humbert. He now faces fellow unseeded player Zhizhen Zhang for a place in round three of this outdoor clay court Grand Slam. Up next for the winner is a match in the last 32 against either fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas or unseeded Daniel Altmaier. Sonego is 49th in the latest rankings but down to 57th in the live rankings. That's because he's defending the points earned when reaching the fourth round last year. That was the second time he's got that far at Roland Garros. His form this year hasn't been that great, though he did recently get to the last four of a Challenger Tour event held in Turin. He's now 54th in the Live ATP Race at the time of writing this preview. The only previous meeting between these players was on the grass at Eastbourne last year with Zhang winning in straight sets.

The Chinese player beat Aleksandar Vukic in four sets to make it into round two, losing the second. He is now 45th in the live rankings and five places lower in the ATP Race. His best performance at Roland Garros came last year when making it to round three. That was his first time in the main draw in the French Open. This year he only won one of his first four clay court matches, including a loss to Humbert who Sonego has beaten twice in 2024. His form returned with a run to the last eight in Rome where he won four consecutive matches in straight sets before losing to Alejandro Tabilo. We tip Sonego to follow up his good first round win.
